  5. I’m a small block fan but there’s something about a big block in one of those cars....

Scotty I thought I was a small block guy but big blocks in these old Vettes make the blood pump a little faster it seems. I still plan on doing another with a small block I hope, so I have not gone over all the way to the other side . Here is mine in the avatar car and come to think of it we both like the same valve covers.

  8. You’re a bad influence! I’m still trying to figure out what I want to do with 57.

Drive the SHIT out of it

  10. I’m finally able to do that (some)! When Dad gave it to me he gave me direct orders to do what I want to it. I know he would come back and haunt me if I restored it so I want to turn it back into a hot rod. It’s got a fairly lame drive train in it at this time.

  11. Jim, this sbc you mentioned would it be a retro 327-301-etc or a more modern big inch stroker? I’m conflicted on the mater.

Scotty what do you consider a "fairly lame drive train". I can't believe I'm saying this but I moved back to NY with my 57 that had a LT-1 in it but spun a bearing. I had a complete 265 solid lifter motor laying around so I put it in and drove the 57 around. Went to the first GG event in Rhinebeck with the car, saw all the other hot rods and needed to make mine better. That was almost 30 years ago and it hasn't been on the road since. Still registered and insured, hope springs eternal. I was 40 then I'm 70 now and haven't enjoyed the 57 in all that time. Just something to think about.

  13. I’ve got some options......

I sold this one years ago it had 365hp 327, Muncie m20 and a 355 rear gear. I want to get the 57 back to that level or MORE!.,

  14. It’s got an ‘85 TPI 350, my6 OD 4spd, 3.36 gear. It’s not bad but the engine could use freshening and the trans is kind of awkward.

  15. Dad let it sit disassembled for 20 years, so I’ve seen that and know to avoid that situation, it runs and drives fine as is. I won’t take anything apart until the new mill is ready to drop in. Pat do have pics of your 57?

Scotty I am conflicted as well. If I can ever get back on a project I started, I have two ways to go. An old MSP car (1966ish era) or a C/S in 68ish era with a .060 327. Either way though I would like to use a Pontiac rear which would be not correct for C/S but I may do it anyways. If I go MSP I would use what Bagshaw used in his Red Light Bandit, which was a 377ci. in the mid 60s. Not sure which way to go, but I have time to ponder it as I have another project I need to get done first anyways (a one cylinder 1903 Cadillac). I am old school and pretty simple; I like many but lean towards 327, 427 and 377 when you talk "big inch" small blocks. Some guys tell me to go 383 which are great but I think I could have comparable fun with a 377-I hope. I kind of want a car I can beat on a bit with a four speed that I can come out of the hole with some decent RPMS. The 301 would certainly be the ticket but I have to get by my brain and what I feel is "more correct" I suppose. In a 62, a 331 or 377 would be more correct IMO. I have a 327 sitting on an engine stand and I may have to open it up and see what I have. I know I have two sets of pistons with a decent pop up and rods to match and my budget to start may require I build a 327ish to start with. I have to worry as I am getting older and want to beat the clock for sure.

I just redid the red Vette and now that it is really nice again I am not sure how much I want to hammer on it-although the temptation is there.

I had thought 301 when I was contemplating building a 61 but I am building a Frankenstein out of discarded parts and it will be a 62 body so I suppose 301, which I really like is out.

By the way you have a whole bunch of eye candy for sure. Decisions, decisions.

  17. Jim I spent last Saturday riding around in a 68 vette with a simple 383sbc that I built 20 some years ago, I was impressed. It has an m20 and 3.36. It pulled like a diesel with no need to rev it very high. The sbc in my pic with the L79 air cleaner is a 383 roller motor with alum heads for my 56 Belair. I’ve thought of cloning that for the 57 but I also have 2 327 small journal and a 327 large journal also a modern era 350 roller cam block IM SO CONFUSED!:D

It’s good to have options. After looking at your parts stash I need to find a swap meet:) I am falling behind.

Interesting. Scotty T. owns a Corvette and another Corvette is a regular at Scotty B’s. :)

It would be cheaper to rent 2 guys and a truck.
If I brought him I would have to feed him.

LB that blue 62 I believe is Jim's (Vetrod 62) car that he still owns, only now it is brandywine, is lower, and carries a big block. I believe Jim may be a bit busy but I am sure he is still enjoying his solid axle Corvettes-hope he got to stretch his legs on the dragstrip this summer..
