I bought a 340 2 weeks ago and it had aar/ta heads and they are 73cc. The problem is I am not interested in the aar/ta head I want a aluminum head, but I cant find one with 73cc. The piston sticks up quite abit out of the head .170, it does have valve relief cut into the pistons. I believe that I have to have the 73cc chamber to use the pistons, who makes a aluminum head that I can use? trying to get this motor together for drag week. Yes the heads are for sale. Tony
Yeah it sure does, it has Arias pistons, that I could adjust for a smaller chamber head, or buy new pistons. It also has a crane fireball cam. I could run it the way it is and see how it does.
You need to check for T-A after the casting number on the side of the block. If it's there you might have a few dollars on your hands. Gene.
It has adjustable rockers that are specific to the heads. The block is just a normal 1970 340 block. I don't have it together right now but I did get the heads back from shop today. They have the block for cleaning and magnafluxing . They are also checking crank and I will assemble. If there are any tips or tricks for assembly I would be willing to listen.
Are the pistons the stock 10.5-1 compression? For some reason remember Edelbrock making a cylinder head for the 340 high compression pistons. I did find a bare casting with extra machining in the chambers for the stock type pistons. If I had this project...I think I would market the heads. I believe they would have more worth to a restorer. Don't really know about the pistons. But I will ask. I do know they need to be right up there to make any amount of compression. There is a head out there that my machine shop guy likes. I will get the name.
Jim, yes the pushrod holes are offset. Slayer, the pistons are aftermarket Arias, and have marks in the bottom to balance the whole assembly. There are no numbers on the pistons, so I am going to call and see if they can tell me anything. alphabet soup, heads are for sale, and I agree that some restorer would be more interested in them than I am. I am looking for something lighter. If anyone can tell me about the cam that would be great, cant find much info on line about it. Tony
all i could find. i built a 360 for a buddy years ago and looked at this cam, but ended up going with the old direct connection 280º purple shaft. Crane Fireball #300A Should be .447" / .447" Lift with an advertised Duration of 300* Duration @ .050" = 222* to 232*
If you have some idea what year the engine was built (perhaps the date code on a bearing insert) you could start a thread asking if anyone has a Crane catalog from that era, and give the numbers on the cam, and maybe someone will look it up and tell you the specs? Or maybe someone will look it up while I'm typing this.

I looked at them and the would work, but looking for a assembled set. I started looking at the trick flow 190, and they only have a 60cc chamber. It had a .040 head gasket, and I believe I could get a .060 gasket and make up the difference. I will have to puddy the cylinder. One down side I have is if I put head studs in and have to pull the head I would have to pull the stud to get it off. Are the ARP bolts just as good as the studs or do I have to go with the studs.
