Technical Lowering a 49 Olds with alternate springs

Ive read on here you can get 79 el camino springs $100 a pair for a 50 Buick with tapered ends. Will these also work on a 49 Olds fastback sedan? Are there any other options besides heating them, buying lowered springs ($500) or drop spindles etc?

 

Are you talking lowering the front or the rear ? For the rear, GM intermediate 68-74 Chevelle etc, there is quite a range of spring rates available, and they are a direct bolt in with the early Olds hardware.

 

I would like to lower both.

On my 48 Olds 98 convertible I used a rear spring from a GM intermediate.

 

Some body on the HAMB parts for sale had 2 sets of dropped spindles for Pontiac-Olds.

I am told that the '63 thru '70 something C10 rear springs work as well. A 5" drop C10 spring will give the Olds a 3" drop. Anyone know for certain? Here's a 5" drop spring for a C10...

Looks to me that they will. You can get these for less than $100.00 of Ebay.

Fat Man spindles, for the front. I used airbags, in the rear, because the gas tank is so low. Good luck.

 

Dropped spindles w/stock spring will give you a moderate drop w/o any loss of ride quality
NEVER heat the springs to lower a car. It's a hack job and can ruin the spring temper.

 

I used mid 70s Olds cutlass on the rear of my 49 Olds.

 

How much drop did it give you?

Hey Phil... What did you use for the rear air bags? Something that worked with the stock trailing arms or did you 4 link it? Thanks...

 

I don't remember the brand. But I used the stock spring pockets and trailing arms. I retrospect, I would have raised the gas tank a bit. My Olds was a 98. Big car.

 

Thanks... I have been thinking about bagging the rear of mine since my gas tank is so low, I want to get ass end down more but I am concerned about the tank dragging. Raising the gas tank would help.

 

Were they stock springs or a lowering spring? Thanks...
