Hot Rods Earl Wade clevor motor

  1. Look at the block right above the timing chain cover, if it’s a 302 or smaller version, the deck for the cylinder head will be almost level with the timing chain cover. If it’s a 351W, the deck will be approximately 1/2 or so taller.

Only time I saw Dyno Don run he didn't need a high HP engine. Car went from trailer , red lighted and back in the trailer . It gave me a case of the "disappointments".o_O:(

I forget which way it goes but look at the fuel pump shape at the timing cover. One is a C shape one is wider google it and from the shape you know if it's a 351 Windsor or Cleveland.

We built our from a 351 Windsor and it has the regular looking fuel pump pattern. So the Cleveland must be the long style pump.

  13. Cleveland has a “cast in to the block” timing chain cover. Windsor has a bolt on timing chain cover. The Cleveland has a flat cover over the timing “tunnel”.

The more I look at it, I'm thinking it's a 302 as well. The water pump bolt is right under the deck, and the corner of the head is too close to the distributor for a 351W. A quick identifier is that the intake surface on a 302 is flush with the distributor hold down. On a 351W it is higher.

The head should have a 2 or 4 cast on the intake side corners, which will tell you the valve and port size.
I've read that some of the late 351M/400 heads had no number.

Cleveland no coolant in the intake manifold.

Thermostat on the intake manifold means 302/351 Windsor, but the big canted valve heads are 351 Cleveland or 351/400 Modified. Likely, this is a Clevor which is a 351 Windsor with Cleveland heads which was the "hot setup" back before there were plentiful aftermarket heads for Fords.

But, what the hell do I know, I'm a Pontiac guy.

Last time I saw him........'he beat the dog crap outta Da Grump'..stomped him.
1972 Cocoa Beach area, in Florida
One of them.".....Run Whatcha Brung and hope You Brung Enough".... match races. He hung around and signed autographs and "mingled" with a bunch of us sailors!
That fella could 'row through some gears'!! This was back when the drivers would get out and "walk-the-track" checking for traction before the match race. I guess it was a lot of theater be we ate it up!!
Hell far its been 40 years and I can still "see-it" in my mind's eye!
    Sorry for 'departing-from-the-subject'.

You got that right. I had one customer with a 351C 4V Mustang, and another with a Cougar.

Neither was a good street car. Both customers lived in a city.

I had a Shelby dual 4 intake with 600 Holleys , and gear drive secondaries with squirters. Ran it in a Jeep with the engine pictured above. Jeep 1.jpg

My intake is also a Shelby low rise, I will be running two Holley 390CFM with vacuum secondary’s. A couple of Stelling & Helling air cleaners. This should be just enough carb for this engine being it is just for street use.

The firing order is determined by the camshaft. 302 and down had one firing order, 351W had a different one. But since the cams will interchange, the firing order only indicates which cam you have.

Marty has heard me say this before but there is a good chance I was standing in that group of guys watching the spectacle, that Jeep/Boss motor was a handful.

Dyno Don was the 1977 Pro-stock world champion so it's a safe bet he's put more bowties on the trailer that you could count.

If your ever working on C or M block be sure to install the thermostat limiter and correct thermostat or you will fight for the life of your engine to determine why it is overheating . This was the look on a Buddy’s after removing a Boss 351 C from his 71 Pinto for overheating issues . A 6.00 part was omitted by the machinist , a hot tank cleaning .
