  4. I posted this once before in another thread a while back. It always makes me smile whenever I happen to see it again so I'm tossing it in this particular pigpile hoping you will enjoy it too.
I've named it "Dyno Day" but I'm not sure if that's correct. It's most likely something much simpler to just run the engine or tires under load.

  23. Not gas station related. but something kids would do. At the close of the war my dad amoung with some other still teen Army Air Force boys. where stuck at the air base in England. All the good planes Had flown back to the USA. They wanted to go home very badly. So they Asked the commander If they put together a plane from parts of the crashed planes could they fly it home. He stated if you can find a pilot. all the pilots where gone. There was one kid who was 19 and just got out of the hospital. He said I will fly it. So they built a plane out of parts and pieces and got the bomber ready. they loaded it with contraband ect. And flew that cobbled plane across the atlantic. And They arrived in New York after dark. made a circle to land and that plane shudderd and shook and almost stopped. The pilot opened up the engines to full throttle and it gained speed. then they looked and all the lights where out . The kid flying it stated I forgot about the landing gear. We caught the high tension power lines. They circled until they lined vehicles up on the runway for lights. After they landed the kid flying stated that's the first bomber I ever flew. I have only flew a corsair. The MP's rounded them up . they had no paperwork. Charged with stealing a plane hauling contraband. leaving base without a pass. They got sent to Soo City to await court marthall. The guy in charge there had them change their address to local towns and gave them all a discharge. No travel pay. But back then it was a sin to not give a solder a ride. They hitch hikes home.

An example of the very 1st gas station that I personally became aware of. (San Gabriel Village Phillips 66 - Originally a Tidewater Associated Flying A).
