Ditto, Cam and adjustable lifters that have a foot larger then 1". Never run old lifters on a new cam unless they have been resurfaced.

The over carburation thing is important too. For most modest upgrades in add on hop up parts, A well tuned single 2 barrel will be faster and better driving then a twin 2 barrel set up. IMHO.

I ran a well used B engine that came out of a stock BB truck. I pulled the head and pan. checked and adjusted the main and rod bearings. Replaced the stock .040" over pistons with .040" over aftermarket modern style pistons and rings without boring the cylinders (cylinder walls had .010 "belly" in the center). Used a glaze breaker hone to scuff up the cylinder walls. Changed the cam to a pretty aggressive Winfield grind cam from Jim Brierly. New metal timing gears. Installed a Wieand 7.5 : 1 HC head. Ran two 81 Strombergs on a down draft / lakes style intake header set up. drove and raced it A LOT. It lasted 10,000 + miles until it pushed out the Babbitt in the rods. paid $600 for the engine and probably had $3000.00 in the hop up parts. Your results may very.

This is what replaced that engine. basically the same set up. but with insert bearings and full oil pressure.

Engines only need underwear if running faster than 7.99 over 1/4!

    Same motor was an option in commercials/trucks in 1941 , model # 1NC, 1ND and 1NY and in 1942, model 2NC, 2 ND and 2NY . Yes like half a flathead V8. 40hp.

The Golden Jubilee/NAA was a new tractor that came out in 1953. Different engine from the 1948-vintage 8N or the 1939-vintage 9N. It had overhead valves and 32 hp and that's the extent of my knowledge on the topic, lol!

Gents. Got my Winfield S-B carb! In the process of cleaning it up and putting new gaskets. Had a question ; can i do away with the choke or should I keep it. If I got rid of the choke elbow I was going to adapt a pipe to the flange and put a filter or stack. Just a thought

  11. I'd keep the choke and it's elbow. It very well might be a part of "The Flow" of the carb!

It certainly goes a long way to making it look like a Winfield! I've spent many hours contemplating how I could make up similar stacks/scoops for the 81s going on my car--they'd go a long way toward making my 1937 carburetors fit with the 1934 timeframe of my build.

  13. You could look for one of the SR chokes. Those don't have the elbow. I run a Winfield and use a very fine brass screen between the choke and throttle body.

  14. There was someone who used one of those in a T modified for TROG. Should be a build thread. Believe his name was Clark. He supercharged it and said it performed well.

I'm pretty sure Clark's engine was the flathead 9N engine as adapted for truck use in 1941. It was the stand-in for the discontinued V-8/60 before they redesigned the truck for 1942 and it could finally accommodate the new straight six.

My BB winfield carb came with the straight choke. I used an adaptor to attach one of those chrome generic air cleaners, then later added a modified 1935 Ford air cleaner. Looks better without an air cleaner IMO> I like the sound of what 62pan has done.

@waxhead that looks cool. I’m guessing you’re running a fuel pump since I see a line going up and down. Is the tank not high enough to gravity fuel to the Winfield ?

I was running a low pressure fuel pump and regulator with this set-up. Do you have the manual to set up these carbs?? I am pretty sure it mentions fuel supply pressure in there somewhere. I can dig it up if you want me to, but I am sure that the Winfield would run without a fuel pump also.

I recommend keeping the choke. I use mine every time I start it cold. I have the SR-B carb. For a filter, I picked up a cheap old stainless steel curved kitchen strainer, trimmed it to fit and safety wired it over the top. It’s still there after over almost a year. I also don’t run a fuel pump and keep the fuel at least over 1/4 tank.

Thanks for the information guys !

I'm going to have to fab a choke bracket up for my carb since it dodmt come with it and one ball side of the bar link with the ball ends has broken off. Unless I can find another one which I doubt I'll have to tig weld it carefully

    Hey Jet,
Original Winfield Manifold painted Ford green! Neat!
My, I wonder how that would fare at the Dirt Drags?
    Plus the 1931 Ad.
    Cheers,

I’ll bet any Weber has better performance. It just doesn’t have the cool factor of a 80 year old performance part.
