  4. This one is Ohio George. The sticker on the door is from the British Drag Fest in 1964

Other than the graphics, the difference is in the front fender "replacement fender extensions", after NHRA told him the cut-away fenders was a violation of the "no aerodynamic mods" clause in the Gas rules. Ohio added them to make the front clip legal again.

This is probably 64 or 65 Nationals. Talked to George at a gasser meet a few years ago. I mentioned seeing the car at Dragway 42 shortly after he had switched to Chevy power. I recalled the car doing small wheel stand, stuttered, then going up on the back bumper and coming down damaging the front axle. He kinda looked off when I said that and said " Oh yea, I remember that. I really hurt the car when that happened". I hesitated to talk to him. He was never someone that was very approachable in his younger days.

On that Chizler car I wonder why the LH headlight bucket is turned about 90 degrees? The openings aren't round - they're ellipses.

That must have preceded the legendary Ridge Route Terrors AA/FD of Warren Coburn and Miller.

  23. The Bones, Dubach, Pisano Willys coupe would definitely be rebuilt today.

1965 NHRA Nationals Indianapolis. The Hurst Gasser Passer Anglia waits in the tech inspection line followed by Ohio George Montgomery's '33 Willys coupe.

This was from the days when sportsman tech took place at the Speedway Shopping Center on Crawfordsville road, just inside the I-465 loop. This practice continued until at least 1984, the first time that I attended the US Nats.
It is also interesting that Ohio George's Willys has the front fender extensions that the NHRA made him run to restore some of the original frontal area that was lost when he clipped the fenders.

1965 NHRA Nationals Indy Stone-Woods-Cook's Swindler A leaves the line with wheels up while Jack Merkel's '33 sneaks a lead. Doug Cook, however, gets the better of him further down the strip.

Jack's son Todd is now driving - a Heads Up O/T shootout car. Was last years track champ.

[EDIT: Come to think of it Doug's son also drives all sorts of race cars.]
