Nice Bob..

 

I made this for a friend whose last name begins with "W"

 

I'd call it
Chevy BowTide
and it looks like it's about ready
to rip away from it as it advances quickly...

I did this years ago for the owners of the lickety split race team, ( race 9 ) T-6 racer for RENO air races. One of the owners was named Jack. The 3 racers were Jack, Skeets, and Bob.

 

The front engine is an 1830 Pratt and Whitney radial off of a B-17, the rotor head is off of a Aerospatiale lama, the cockpit is from an air tractor crop duster, and the tail rotor is a bell jet ranger 3, the tractor is a MM model " U " for universal. Drew this years ago to satisfy the tractor and helicopter people at Oshkosh airshow.

 

Grumman Goose, line art and then the color print, the way it looks on the t-shirt. This isn't computer art, all drawn from projected slides, that I shot, original is 33" x 27", first in pencil, then gone back over with pen and ink. Old school.

The top is the line drawing, the bottom is what it looks like when its scanned and digitized and turned into embroidery for a canvas bag, then I painted in the colors with jacquard fabric paint.

 

The rooster is currently in print as a t-shirt

Since Bonneville is coming up very fast next month, full throttle, long distance, racing popped into the memory banks. For as long as I can remember, my brother and I always had a liking to the 1957 Studebaker Hawk. We thought it was a very cool looking car and my brother was considering purchasing it for his teenage hot rod and cruising car. We saw the early Studebakers in plenty of Bonneville photos with the lowered stance and race car look. We even saw several at the early drags, but they were not as successful as most others in the stock and gas coupe/sedan classes.

But, we still liked those oddball fins and thought the factory wind machines must have told them it was a functional airflow design. Of course, our friends laughed at us when we told them it was a car to be considered for the first purchase, cruising and drag racing.

Luckily, a cool looking pale yellow 1951 Oldsmobile Sedan rolled up in our driveway one day. It was my brother’s first car, instead of this 1957 Studebaker. But, it was close.

Ever since that day of the HRM Studebaker cover, we have played with the idea of “What if…” After our 1940 Willys C/Gas coupe accident, our friend from LA was trying to steer us into building something for Bonneville. I am sure it was just to keep the spirits up and not lose our involvement with hot rods and car racing. A black 56 Ford Sedan that recently (1960) ran at Bonneville was sitting in his driveway and he thought that might be a nice car for one or both of us.

He also thought the Studebaker with one of the only supercharged motors had some promise for high speed racing, let alone a sleek semi-streamlined body straight from the factory. So, it might work out for us in the next year or so after total recovery. We had plenty of time during the recovery to talk about the next step, and there were many more "next steps."

All of those other racers at Bonneville with the sleek, earlier version Studebaker coupes had to be on the right track. They just did not have the factory built in fin design… But, future Bonneville racers must have thought that idea does have some merit and added their own rear fender fins.


So, a Studebaker Hawk for the local Bixby Knolls cruising, daily driver to H.S. and Lions drag racing? Who knows, at least it was streamlined to start off...(not that streamlining does anything in the 1/4 mile). But, it never happened...only in drawings, discussions, and memories.

These are very nice,especially that they are hand done, no computer involved, I like the black & white better than the color, but for T-Shirts it usually needs the color. Nice work !

 

The monkey is back. With a paint job this time. Plus I had to try some wild “joker” art. One shot rules. What a crazy combination of art.

I can't draw a straight, or curved line, ask my art instructors back in my college days
So I use Photoshop filters

 

Many years ago, I was a T-shirt vendor at the pike place market for a year and a half. I used to do all of my own silk screening, just black ink on various colored shirts. To attract attention to my table, I decorated this white lab coat with my designs, and then I went back and hand painted them in with jacquard textile fabric paint. People always wanted to buy it from me, I would just say, sure write me a check for $700.00 and its yours, that kept the tourist and idiots moving along ! ( grin )
