It was a great day! I spoke to Gene Winfield for a while...so that was incredibly rad!!

Ran into a lot of HAMBers, Bob Bleed, Tuck, Titus, Mr. Cheater, and Continental John.

Damn. I gotta get there. I completely forgot to get it on the calendar to take some days off.

How much was the 33 Tudor?

Resting in the campground. Don’t even need the a/c tonight.

What was a long one day excursion is now a three day affair, even though the show has diminished in size, like most others over the years.

Looks like some great stuff, how where the prices? My list; factory lightweight Deuce Coupe, 33 Ford Tudor, Chevy roadster p/u. Thanks, Carp.

  11. Think I saw $32,500 ? The Vicky kept calling my name, but I did my best to ignore it , 14K for that.

In that top photo we see the elusive Mr Cheater sporting his chain stitched jalopy Journal shirt trying to score a Covinco 17” steering wheel

I had bought a bunch of 49-50-51 Mercury moldings earlier and was walking around with my cart, we went to Gene Winfield's booth and he spotted some Merc coupe beltline trims and he pulled them out, asked what I paid, and he and I made a deal on them so they went home with him. Cool to see Gene but way cooler to have had something he wanted and strike a deal with the legend himself. My buddy Luke got a picture of he and I making a deal.

Sounds like some of the older hotrodder shrewed dudes I know of....ask what you paid, then want to buy it???:D
Generally kind of bad manners to ask what someone paid in the first place, but then.... when you are Gene Winfield or some other honorable hotrodder who has earned his stripes, I guess that makes it ok:D

  24. I think once you hit 70-75 that rule no longer applies and in general they say and do how they please. They've earned it. Fun to listen to them because most filters are off.

It was very cool. He noticed the moldings from a distance and came up and asked about them. He said he buys every set he can find, asked me what I paid. I told him $40, which is true, although he just wanted the beltline stuff and a few other bits came along with it (it was a screamin' deal, the only reason I bought them). So he says "I'll give you $60" I asked if he had anything to trade, so I checked out his table and I said I'd do $40 and this cast plaque, which he did and he signed it for me. I actually kept the $40 too, can't bring myself to spend it.

I know that's cheap for the moldings, but I really wanted to do the deal just for bragging rights. Plus, the couple other extra bits I had gotten with them completed some other sets I was putting together, which basically were free at that point, so everyone did good on this deal. Gene's a great guy, it was really fun to do.

My first time in about 10 years since the last one I went to. Buddy of mine and I went and walked about 14 hours the first two days and were not able to cover the entire swap section. I thought it was a great show with lots of good stuff, nice people, and great weather.
To boot I recently bought a 53 Buick special from a guy in Minnesota who delivered it on Saturday near the show. He had sold the chrome off of it 1 day before I purchased it. So at the show I was looking for replacements. Found some that were only some of the pieces and the guy told me he had walked the whole show and did not see any others around. I waited and walked about 8 booths down to find the full set on cardboard. I pulled the pictures I had of the car I purchased and blew them up. Some of the dings scratches and stains looked familiar. The chrome was actually off the car I had purchased and the guy selling them was from Minnesota. He originally planned to use them on a Merc project but found better pieces. I asked if he'd recognize the car he took them from and showed him the picks. He says yep and the guys name was Marty. Confirmed. I bought the car for less than it was originally listed with the chrome on it and the guy selling the chrome sold it to me for the difference in the price drop. Sorry you Merc guys! Couldn't believe it!
