  13. You got a better than average example to start out with. Lots better than my 55 wagon was when I bought it. I think you might be better off to buy a complete 4 door and use it for parts. That's what I did. The first pictures are what I started with. the last was taken yesterday. To date I have about a $1,000 spent on the wagon. 55 chev 3.jpeg 55 chev 7.jpeg 55 chevy 1.jpeg 55 chevy 2.jpeg 55 chevy.jpeg 55 chevy.jpg 55 more door 1.jpeg 55 more door.jpeg 55 moor door 2.jpeg 55chev4.jpeg RUFF& TUFF 004.JPG

    Hello,
In our early drag racing days, we read the Drag News weekly paper like it was a school assignment. Despite what was on the cover page, we whipped through to the Lions Dragstrip page and read the story/results. Most of the time, the Long Beach Lions story was usually on the front page as big names and big time happenings appeared weekly at that dragstrip.

When we won a trophy or two or took movies of the action on special days, it was fun to see what was written about the action for the day. It was like reliving the moment all over again. Then, something happened, we were reading more stories about drag racers from the Midwest going fast and setting records. What record setting racers, somewhere else, other than Florida, Texas and California?

Since we were interested in all forms of drag racing, but especially in the Gas Coupe and Sedan Classes, we read about them first. One of the most interesting cars from the Midwest that we constantly read about was the 1955 Chevy Bel Air hardtop in the B/Gas and C/Gas classes. There was a red and white Chevy Bel Air locally in Bixby Knolls, but it was nowhere near the high performance quality of the one from the Midwest.

Like the time we read about Don Garlits setting speed records from Florida. There were doubtful people from all over the West Coast about the accuracy of those early speed records. Then in the Gas Coupe and Sedan Classes, the records fell to some drag racers from the Midwest. What?

Our doubts were satisfied in March of 1960 when we actually saw the red/white 1955 Chevy Bel Air at the 2nd Annual Bakersfield Smokers March Meet. What an impression that 55 Chevy made on two teens from Long Beach. It was impressive to say the least. We went home thinking what we had to do to make our 40 Willys Coupe faster and better. That was the goal for us. (671, Bigger motor, cam/lifters, blower pistons, Joe Hunt Vertex mag, polished heads, Reath Crank, M&H, Halibrands and Hilborn two port injection.) We came close, though…
