History BILL….SMITH’S....ROADSTER

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Austinrod, May 28, 2019.

  1. Looks like 1949 Oldsmobile 88 steering wheel.

  2. Prolly the same one the original 303 came out of.

Typically I see these glued on using a lot of clamps all the way around to keep it in place, although since your boards aren't really removable, that might be tougher. You might have to invest in a bunch of deep-throat woodworking clamps, then when you have it trimmed to fit and glued, you can clamp all the way around the perimeter. Some long thin strips of wood between the clamps and rubber will give even pressure and avoid marring.
I would suggest roughing up the paint underneath before the glue goes on, as glue tends to stick a lot better to a rougher surface.

I will say though, the car is going to look a lot nicer with those on it. Those mock-up pics look good, even with the ill-fit.

@Austinrod is Bill a Visual Artist?...I mean this really has an Elegant, Classy Mix Of Hotrod/Custom (at least that's the vibe I'm getting). What I'm asking is did he draft this idea up on his own or did he like many do just disassemble, chop, weld and there ya go?...

If he did it would be cool to see what else he had up his sleeve...

Love those Shots...They definitely accentuate the level of build presented...Enjoying the journey...;)

    Thanks Stogy
The Rootlieb version came out a year earlier
So who knows if that inspired the build or not

  20. Oh no kidding?! I saw you mention Rootlieb before but I guess I missed something?! What are the odds of that huh? It’s like Ivo copying Norm’s T I guess!

I was wondering if they knew each other...it was same base and model...but The upper doorline, the top and no doubt several other things differ but it raises a question.

It's just the How of the matter...I am not against cloning per say...

    Nice!!!!!
    Big change to the car.

I’ve done many ‘40 Fords running boards with Bob Drake covers. Once you get started, you can’t stop. You gotta get it done with what you have sometimes.

    Love it, good work!!!

They are just covers, not like the stock vulcanized ones. They are never going to be that nice.

Plus I think you cut the ends off of those to make it work. I’d a done it like that too, they are probably fine. Better than the smoothie for sure
