Customs My version of a speedster using Deere parts.

So I built this. Deere radiator, two cylinder vertical flathead engine, pedals, steering, seats and more. T frame with model A axles.

 

That’s a one of a kind ride there. Do you drive it anywhere?

 

Got it done for a show in June, but still working through some clutch and brake issues that make it a little scary to drive in traffic. I bought an aftermarket clutch disc, which I found out was a little too thick and I had to go in and put washers between the flywheel and pressure plate. The linkage to the brakes needs some better engineering also.

I was a bit nervous before I opened this thread, but that's pretty cool!

 

Quick yet blurry video of the engine running. It's only rated at 15 horsepower, which isn't that far off a model T. It has a heavy flywheel and will spin the rear tires.

No, the original radiator for that engine is about 12x16.

 

So does it come with the slow moving triangle on the back?

 

Deere actually built cars - the Velie - but this doesn't have the 'cool' factor yours does. Great car!

It's actually scary fast. Not so much top speed, but it is geared too high for close quarters. No way you could drive it on a trailer. If I had to do it all over again I'd have used a four speed tranny with a creeper low.

 

The Velie and Deere and Clark were actually side projects by some members of the Deere family. Never an actual Deere and Company product.

 

That's pretty cool. What's the engine out of?

 

It's out of a model 12A Deere pull type combine from the 1940s. It's actually the same engine used in a model "LA" tractor. As some of you probably know Deere used two cylinder horizontal engines in anything over about 20 horsepower, so I didn't have a lot of engine choices.

 

I always thought it'd be neat to build something around a pony motor for a 720, but they're pretty heavy - and hard to come by.

They aren't hard to find if you know where to look. The problem is they are designed to run 5500 RPM for a minute or two. Not sure how they would hold up with prolonged running.

 

I happen to have two of those flathead 2 cyl engines in my hoard. And mine have small radiators with brass tanks. Your radiator looks like one from a unstyled B?

I own came off of the old pull type combines. they are made to run countinuiosly.

Probably the same engines this speedster has.

 

I took them off some scrap combines and bought them from the scrap man. just hated to see them recycled. pulled the heads and got then turning over. never heard them run. I also got a small 4 cyl overhead valve deere engine at the same place. It wasn't stuck.
