I’m going to check on the shaft today since I put a different flywheel in the car that has been lightened and fitted with a v8 clutch. I can’t see it being the battery. It’s brand new and charges up.

I finally got mine running. Sounded great till a big end shell picked. Stripped it down and found a tang position problem with the bearings allowing the bearing to run up the radius on the journal.
Thinking that was the problem, the motor was fully stripped, cleaned and reassembled. Fitted and run up only to pick up the same big end.
Got the motor apart again and looking for the cause.

I have seen plenty of NEW batteries which were faulty. Especially the damned sealed ones. You need to load test the battery. A battery can take a charge , but if it has and warped or otherwise damaged plates it may not pass a load test. A battery shop should be able to do this for you, (Pep Boys , Autozone etc could probably do the test , although they may NOT know what is acceptable for a 6 volt battery. I think you can buy a load tester for under $50 in the USA...a lot more here in NZ!
Otherwise the in car test is not only the voltage drop on starting/cranking but also the amperage draw. You need an inductive ammeter to test this.

  4. I'm worried about a basic electronic ignition and a downdraft carburetor. Then I see Nutrocker post. It's like a glimpse into a mad scientist's lab. Incredible! Any videos of that setup running?

Yeah, sort of. I keep going back to it and trying something different but still don’t seem to be getting enough oil at the big ends. Plenty of oil through the crank, but as soon as I fit the bearings the flow seems to dry up. Checked all the clearances and they’re all fine.
    I’ll get there.

Starting got better. The only thing I hadn’t checked was the starter switch because I was not familiar with them and what was inside. I opened it up and saw that where it contacts the button of the starter it self was grey colored. Sanded it all down to shinny copper and the switch copper plate also. Starts up way faster.

  9. It sounds like you are starving the rods for oil? The pics of the crank don't show the cross drilled holes, but I have to believe they are there. Matching up the shells with grooves to the feed holes will help. As a rule of thumb, the oil passage to feed a single main and rod is min 1/4", to feed two rods 5/16". How much pressure are you pushing?

Yes, crank is cross drilled. I have good feed to all mains and big ends, until I bolt big end caps on then it dries up. The mains are set at .0025” and big ends at .0015” clearance. The oil feed holes to all the mains is no smaller than 5/16” until it gets to the groove in the mains. The drilling in the crank is 3/16”.
I can run any pressure I want from 20psi to over 200psi. It’s a race dry sump pump and I’d set the idle speed to 40psi and a max of 60psi. It had a very high flow if needed too.
At the moment I’m working on modifying the big end shells by adding a groove and/or a X to allow better oil transfer from the oil feed hole in the journal around the bearing. Currently there’s nothing in the bearings.

    Pete.

  11. Pete,
OK, that makes sense, the rod journals are long in length and that will be an issue.
making a small groove in the bearing where the oil feed hole is will cure the issue. (360 degrees around)
I don't run that style rod/bearing combination, using Chev V8 style, 2.0 dia and .860 long.

Spied this my little eye when I was buying the winfield head..half buried in a box of junk, looks like it spent a few years in a mud puddle. Got it at the 'new bro' price after ponying up for the head. The two bolt adapters are cast iron aftermarket ones (edit, homemade but nice work) I can port some to fit a pair of webers I got..tried running them with individual manifolds but no bueno..need a plenum.. thumbnail (38).jpg

Checking in-hope you guys all had a good 4th! I've managed to drive my roadster 30 out of the last 36 days, logged a little over 700 miles. Only got drowned once! A couple very pleasant 100+mile Sunday morning trips up near Yellowstone and surrounding areas. I live at 5500' and everything goes up from here. 43/42 mains/ 71 PV's. A little rich still, but livable especially with the 8:1 head. One thing with the dual carbs-97's or 94's- good mileage! low-mid 20mpg. Rethinking my rear shock/suspension setup. Tspring with 2 leafs removed (they were cracked anyway) it rides really nice but if I hit a frost heave or something it compresses, then Springs! up, totally overpowering the shocks. Not cool in a corner. I've got a good pair of 36's I'll try. They're way stiffer. I'll report back.

Shutter Speed- my old mounts shook too much and were too low for my liking so I got an original bar to mod. To tell the truth I kind of forgot about it heh...I head in to work at 6, so sun's up! I better get that done.

That is one insane (in a good way) banger!!!!
Did you machine those pushrod guides filling the old valve seats?
Did you cut out the old seats or taper the plugs?
Are the flush with deck or +/-?
I need to do that to fit up my Alexander head.
    Thanks!

    Hi hotrodA

You can get those from Secrets of Speed

    Valve Plugs (sold each)
    $16.95 IN STOCK

Fit Model A & B Ford with "F" head OHV conversions.
Special CNC'd aluminum Plugs fit into the (unused) intake valve seat on OHV "F" head conversions.
    They are non-mechanical.
Used to support the head gasket and channel OHV oil return to the crankcase.
The large OD is sized for a press fit into a hole machined in for a hardened ring seat. The large OD can be turned down to fit a stock valve seat.
Best to install first and then deck the block. Plug should be flush with or a hair below the deck surface.
The small OD is pre-sized to press into the empty valve guide hole.
This part is included with all our OHV kits.

Sounds like the Bennington PD, you'd think they'd have better things to do.

Any chance you're bringing your truck down to the Hemmings Cruise Night on Friday? I'd love to check it out in person.

Well, our cruises are normally on Thursdays, so this is your chance! ;) Or, there's always next year's National Collector Car Appreciation Day.
