I really appreciated the Arizona pics. I spent most of my life in AZ, and will always consider it home. I have personal versions of most of your pics!

  2. It looks like an epic journey so far

Mostly 1st and 2nd gear... and a lot of white knuckling. Thank god for dual electric fans!

Burns about a quart every 500 miles or so... and I have developed a leak between the trans and the torque tube. As long as she is level or on a slant back it’s all good. But if I park on a downward slope she leaks. Also lost my gas gage. Just reads full all the time. Might be a bad ground? But all in all... the old girl did good.

We made it!!!! Philly to Cali in 2,970 miles... and seven days in a stick shift 1963 Rambler wagon with three kids and a complaining wifey! Pulled into our Disneyland Hotel at 2:00 California time. Now we have three days to have fun and chill... until we get back in the car and start all over again. Unfortunately I do not have a decent camera. These are all from my iPhone eight... but it’s actually doing a good job. Like the Rambler... lol

Mark I just got that same surprise package from my friend who travelled with me from Detroit to Santa Maria and then to his place in Encinitas when we did the Hudson trip last year across USA. They(probably his wife) put together a beautiful book with photos of the trip, visits to Museums we did on the way and shots of the car at various places including Santa Maria WKC Cruising Nats. Wow what a great effort from them. It is going in pride of place in the rumpus room!! Front and rear cover shown and a couple of the inside ones. 20190625_094536_resized.jpg 20190625_094544_resized.jpg 20190625_094615_resized.jpg 20190625_094637_resized.jpg

  13. This has been a wonderful trip! Thanks so much for the idea and inspiration. My family and I are discussing this right now. It’s going to be a couple of years, I gotta find something old and cool to drive! Your Rambler is perfect!

  14. You might want to check the rear axle and transmission lube levels. The axle may be low and the trans may be over-filled. Or vice versa. Or maybe neither.

Ha. I stand corrected. But then you do seem to have a decent camera/phone. And more importantly you seem to have a pretty good eye for what you're shooting.

Wasn’t going to post any pics of Disney... but “Cars Land” is epic!!! My kids and I were blown away. They nailed Route 66 to a T! I’m so glad we did this trip and didn’t just fly here. We spent so much time together picking out each buildings inspiration from what we saw all week. So cool... I’ll post a few pics so you can see. But pics won’t do it justice.

16DF2336-9D8D-4DD5-AD7F-89A298824122.jpeg Tomorrow is our last day at Disney already... that flew by really quick. We’re going to hit the Grand Canyon on the way home, alongside with a few other 66 stops we were forced to skip on the way because of time restraints. I’m weirdly looking forward to going back to the middle of no where again. I’m really hoping the old girl has another 3000 miles left in her. Fingers crossed!

I remember last year when I took the 48 Hudson over to USA and did 6000 miles from Oakland across via 66 and
I-40 first to Dewey OK,then onto St Louis and Indianapolis, then Detroit and then back west to Santa Maria that I hoped the custom car gods were watching. And they were. An electrical problem in Williams and a muffler bracket somewhere on the way home and that was it!!! When I left my wife said "I don't think you have thought this through"
But I knew that car and had confidence. And I think I will do it again in 2021!!

I hope you mean visit, stopping at an overlook, not "hit the Grand Canyon on the way home".

I've been curious and don't think you have posted this but what kind of gas mileage are you getting? I realize that the gas gauge is not working now but were you able get a feel before it quit.

Thanks for taking us on the ride it is so enjoyable seeing the places you guys have stopped at. Safe travels.

Good luck on the drive home. Will you have the Rambler at Macungie in August?

  25. What a great adventure & a testament to throwing caution to the wind and going for it, these old cars traveled many miles when new but you have taken a original 66 year old Rambler, cleaned it up and did the maintenance. loaded up the family and took off, I salute you and wish you a carefree return trip. No mention of the Meteor Crater in AZ. , will you be stopping to see that on your way back ?
Also of interest near there is the old cast concrete bridge built in the Twenties that carried the old rt.66
traffic over Diablo Canyon at the ruins of what's left of "Two Guns", AZ
Thanks for all your photos, It's been great following your trip.

    No fuel gage.
    Keep track of your mileage/odometer
    You’ll be good.
    Godspeed!!

Looks like I was getting around 14mpg before the gage went. But that was a lot of up hill and the old girl is really weighted down. Not sure what a six of that time period is supposed to get. I was foolishly thinking it would get over 20. Another reason may be me keeping it around 70 when we take the highway when 66 doesn’t make sense. Highway 40 is 75 mph... it’s so hard as a car guy to be lapped by minivans. :( but I try to keep her just under 70... seems like 60-65 is her best to run. I’m sure if I was going 55 and had no weight I might be getting closer to that 20 mpg mark.

Yes, planning on hitting the Grand Canyon tomorrow on the way home. We had to get here for our reservations so we ended up skipping some of the things we wanted to see. Hopefully I’ll be able to hit everything else in the next week going home. Hopefully! Lol

Haven't heard any mention of Two Guns, AZ in a long, long time. Broke down there back about '86. Found out I could buy the whole town at that time, including the closed down gas station and KOA campground, for $55,000. Probably should have done it.
