Technical 1933 - 1934 Ford grills

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Snegrah, Jun 19, 2019.

  1. I cannot for the life of me tell the difference between the two. Can y'all explain the differences.

    Thanks in advance.

If you look at the profile from the side 33 is curved and 34 is straight...there may and probably are others but this works for me...also the side hood louvers on a 33 Ford are also curved whereas 34 are not.

  3. Stogy,

Thanks. I now have to put an eyeball on one. Curved 33, straight 34, curved 33, straight 34, curved 33, straight 34...

  4. I just now saw the photos. I'm fairly confident that I can now tell the difference! Thanks!

The Logo is displayed differently as well. This is only passenger cars including Sedan Delivery...Pickups and Panels and other Trucks differ completely.

33 vs 34 curved vs straight.jpg Like said above, the 33 has curved grill bars vs the 34 which has straight grill bars. This is the easies way to tell the difference at a glance.

Most of the differences don't matter if you aren't using a hood top or hood sides.

However they don't interchange without changing out the hood tops and sides, or reworking the hood top and sides. The grill lip is also different on a 33 vs a 34. The 34 has a thicker lip on the grill which requires a shorter length hood top and hood sides than the 33. Also, on the 33, the hood top bends down at the front whereas a 34, the hood is straight. The hood sides on the 34 had two latch handles on each side where the 33 only has 1 hood latch on each side in the middle, so the cowl is a little different (I think the 34 just have a hole for the latch and the 33 is solid).

Another suggestion...look at the grille housing or "surround" where the top of the hood meets the grille in the above two photos. The thinner chrome or stainless "surround" is a '33, the thicker surround ...a '34
....sorry for the repeat. Dirk 35 beat me to it and did a better job explaining.

In addition, '34 grills are 1 year newer than '33 grills.

  12. And the '34 looks better :).

A friend of mine once told me in '33 they made the grille bars curved in the front but in '34 they got lazy and just made them straight. 100% bullshit story but I always remembered which one was which by the "they got lazy" story. Currently have a '34 project with a grille with a bunch of smashed or missing bars and am really glad I don't have to replicate the '33 curved bars, pretty as they are.

    And...
The 34 has slightly wider Grill bars, and they are situated slightly further apart, so there are fewer of them than on the 33. The 33 has a "fine-toothed" look in comparison.

  15. Hey, you guys are the best. I ask a simple question and now I am professional to distinguish the difference between a 33 and a 34 grill. Thanks much.

Next time I'm going to ask something much more difficult like, "What's the meaning of life?"

Uh.....No ! I will trade you every 34 I have for your 33's ! Every once in a while I get stuck with a 34 but just can't bring myself to use it and eventually I find a superior 33. ;) P.S........ I know how guys like you see things but I have to mention, I am an expert ! :D

  21. Just for S & G's, the 33 hood sides only has one latch in the center, the '34 hood sides have two latches. HRP

There is a connection here to Monty Python I believe...I'd like to know the meaning of this reference but I draw blanks...I'm sure it's funny though...:p

It's a bit out there...as in "outer space" out there to be exact. In a sci-fi movie with a cult following, a race of transdimensional beings order a super computer by the name of "Deep Thought" (that would make a great user name on the HAMB) to answer once and for all the Ultimate Question, "the meaning of life, the universe and everything". The computer needed time to answer this "toughy" so it told them to come back in exactly 7 and half million years. When they did the answer was revealed...42.

Personally, I don't understand the answer but then again the question is just as inane. "The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy"

WOW what a lot information.....most very relevant lol.
I am currently in the early stages of building a 34 with a composite F/G body as steel ones are sooooooo expensive in Australia. 34 Grilles are as rare as rocking horse droppings over here as well as the US. I am considering buying a 33 Grille ( Nottingham) and using 33 bonnet ( 3 piece). Can you advise if the above combo will fit my 34 as the 33 grille is 3/4" longer.

  28. It fits......at least my 34 body accepts a 33 hood/grille.
