Hot Rods This Chevy 348 worth salvaging?

Found a 348 in a 58 Chevy in a salvage yard(central Minnesota) that does not advertise.
Has been exposed to the elements for a very long time.
I would bet the cylinder walls have been busted out after all the water and freezing over the years.
Would it be worth saving??

 

That bottom radiator (parts store) hose looks mint!

short answer is : NO. water ran down that intake and found the one open valve and that cyl is solid rust and maybe freeze damage. No telling why it got junked in the first place, maybe rod knock or seized engine way back then. But if you got it for free and had a bath tub of Kroil....or ATF and acetone, you might get it apart to look, but what would you find? A $100 lo-po Chevy core that needs $2 grand.

 

Might make a nice eight-hole planter...

 

How pricey are they? If I had the chance to buy that engine for $50, I'd be all over it. Probably a good water pump core and damper, and I'd tear it apart to see what else was salvageable, does it have exhaust manifolds on it? Those might be good, maybe the main bearing caps, sometimes enough sludge gets caked into the oil pan so that even with a bunch of water in it the pan comes out preserved, ect. I'd doubt the block/crank/heads are going to be salvageable though. And it would have to be dirt cheap. Still though, if anything is saveable, it should be saved. 348 engines are cool engines and uncommon to find in the junkyard.

 

All that stuff is still on the engine, even the manifolds.
I just makes a guy mad that someone pulled the hood off and threw it in the weeds, and all for what? They didn't even pull the engine, pretty much the only reason to remove the hood.
I didn't get a price but I should call and ask.
This block has a X cast on the front drivers side also, I don't think that is a good thing on a 348?

 

Well, i'm a flathead guy, but 348's are VERY COOL ! X 2 on what Squablow says. Heck, it would be neat yard art if noth'n else.

If you have the ambition to save it, let your bank account be your guide.

I was going to say it would make a good "boat anchor" but that cliche is kind of tired.

 

For free, and the drop it in your flower bed.

 

Is there a hood and was it closed?

There is a hood but it was removed 30+ years ago.

 

If it was cheap enough, I'd grab it. Like Squablow said there's some cores, maybe a usable crank and rods. You never know and it would be a shame to see a W motor go to scrap. Yard art is a last resort possibility but I'd rather clean it up, paint it and display it in the corner of the shop.

yes get it and just use it for art & conversation.

 

Lot of work involved for a few parts.

 

will not know until the heads are off might be a good deal then again might be a flower pot I would try it

 

Your starting to sound like a beer commercial...

 

You could pull the intake and heads in place to have a look inside. If it ends up being a lost cause you can still grab the manifolds and unboltable parts without pulling the engine, save what can be saved.

I like a W motor as well as the next guy. Truth is, it just ain't worth much as described. I was at an estate auction a few years ago, bunch of 348 pieces, garage kept. All brought scrap prices or below. Slim market it is.

 

I'll see if I can try to buy the whole car, if I try to buy the engine, in the condition it's in, he will get suspicious and the price will go up.
He said there are two 409 cars out there also, but it's in a 4000 car mess.

 

If the '09's are still in them, go for those!

Did you check the casting # can't remember when the X appeared on the front of the block.

 

Id rather spend hours finding the 409 cars than weeks resurrecting the 348 car....

 

You never know when one of those restoration guys drops by wanting a numbers matching item for his project. I had some SBC cylinder heads, not sure what they were for and now not sure that I want to know, a guy came over look at them and asked if I would be willing to sell them. I replied, "how much are they worth to you?" He look at them real closely, took a straight edge to the mating surface, look at me and said, "blank check".
