My apologies Bama I have reread that Title and yeah smoothing has been done in a huge way without involving tubbing and for all I know forms of tubbing existed prior to 1965...;)...I was 5 so I would have to really on imagery...and the history as spoken.

I could see a filler or panel made to fit flush like a fender skirt on lakes/salt build

The fender skirt idea really seems the best all around approach.

It wouldn’t oil can and you keep the body line.

Also if it’s purely for function you could in theory take it off for the street

You are entitled to not like the look but many of those so called modded Lakes Roadsters however many there were drove Home with the Street Hoodlums attached, went to work Monday morning and back home after...some may have got kicked out of the club...too bad that is but it didn't stop the evolution...

    FREEWAY7.jpg

   ...oh Yeah...;)

Yes it's race, but this inspired smooth body mods fits within the Community whether its fiberglass or Henry equipped...like so much of this go fast evolution it has a following and was part of the genius of it all...;)

Remember that saying that Hotrods were about going fast and as alluded smoothing the brick was an option many chose how to execute it...

Building a sub structure and attaching filler panel would be an easy task.

  14. I think if the car's real low it can be pulled off, but when they sit high like a traditional 40's or 50's build the sides look like a big billboard. I've seen some 28/29 "A" Roadsters that had the side smoothed back in the day, and while they were neat cars with history, I didn't care for them. Lil Jon Buttera built one his "A" Roadsters and left the front half of the wheel well in the quarter panel, then it faded back into the rear of the quarter, make sense? Here's a link to the car. https://www.flickr.com/photos/fredsredt/3233003514/in/photostream/ It was the 1980 AMBR.

I like the car overall. But the missing wheel well messes up the rear proportions for this one

Replicas of vintage parts and bodies are produced with varied levels of quality and I suspect many are cast from former Hotrods and Racers with additional changes based on opinions in styling...will it succeed and be favored?...that has probably played out with some perhaps still available...

I've never been a fan of that look but it is one of the things that were popular back when.
Personally I think having the wheel and tire centered just right in the wheel arch on the body with as close to exact of an arc around the tire as you can get is one of the things that makes for a perfect fenderless hot rod.

  24. Filling them looks off.
If the arch doesn’t follow the tire it truly looks like a holy fuck up.
However moving them isn’t easy and yet alway looks right no matter how far it gets moved up the body to follow the tire

It’s just too hard for some folks to take it all the way so they do dumbo stuff instead. Like run a wider rearend to get more room between the tires to drop to body down between the tires with no thought to the wheel arch and make like dumbo.

    Hi Stogy,
Just saw this post. Here’s the W.E. In those early days of Pioneer Hot Rodding When really “Anything was done”. (Ok, this may be way too many pix for examples)..... 53300C0D-4262-40BA-8086-E9BAF04DE612.jpeg 1F9FA85B-DD90-4C0C-99F1-55025EFD6A99.jpeg 45262C08-6E5C-4645-BA2A-35D9DCBBB2D0.jpeg (This shot below is before the cowl was sectioned and a 40 deluxe dash hammer welded in). A5E6316D-D0A8-400B-9976-2F21069CD0AD.jpeg 0029105E-D450-4745-9FB9-ABCCD21442BB.jpeg That first shot made myself and Fellow PRC member Eric Loe able to readily ID this as the Clem Waske #265b “SCRC Lakes & Roundy Round Racer”.
This Body Work was quite sneaky and extensive if one puts another 29 Right next to it. Clem was an artist as is his son Doc, so they think out of the box....

Now I’d seen cars that had hammered wells before but they weren’t en masse. Here’s another 405E31AC-3539-4126-98F2-912440830AFC.jpeg As you can tell, they both very similar. both have rear rolled pans and both of them were done about the same time.(yellow 29 is owned by Richard Loe) 0E0886FA-B376-4BFB-9646-634B45166218.jpeg If you look at “Jake’s NieKramp” the Wheel Wells just kinda disappear from a dead nuts side view.
I feel very fortunate to have been able look this car over while Jake had it as it was my favorite of all of his cars.... 8ECAC3A8-1748-4216-AF7C-A899370D0E9C.jpeg I mocked this up early in my stewardship, but opted for the Waske version as that’s what is historically correct. D2155467-5AF5-4BC0-A519-01E8F60E8A9E.jpeg 30FA15CD-D2D7-4DCE-85C8-FF8C5893D48C.jpeg A74655BB-26D9-43B8-81CE-DA16EC5729D1.jpeg On the Dye roadster which I was able to ID by lil telltale builders contributions to its very kool look, it almost appears that the wheel wells also go away, but look close as they are indeed there. 6593E778-89BF-4FD9-8B6B-05659A3592D8.jpeg 5C44DD10-7D09-48BC-B1B6-2DDC8ABCA6B6.jpeg
So I hope that this info helps. ;).

    Stogy,
Ya know, there’s times when I wonder why I care so much about it, but then I see this and it snaps me right out of that and then I’m able to add a little bit to a thread. ;).
    Thx again.
