Planning on building a new garage, thought came to mind the other day. I thought of all the things i'm thinking of doing when finished, shouldn't the first thing I get is a fire extinguisher? You see them in cars, but I've never noticed them in garages, even here. Maybe I don't see them but thinking of all the things that can happen and have happened, would make sense to me....it's a cheap preventative if a fire breaks out. Thanks for any feedback.

Always make sure the hose is on and works before doing hot work.
Not had to pull the pins or run the hose.

They need to be checked/recharged periodically.

It's the type of thing you don't need until you need it. And then you sure better have it.

Always keep one with the welder and have a second by the door to the house.

The weld shop at work used to have two 125 cf CO2 bottles on a cart connecting to a single hose. Made me kind of want one for the home shop.
Extinguisher bottles are different from regular gas bottles, as they send liquid from the bottom out the hose.

You bet I have an extinguisher handy. Just noticed the one we've had in our pantry for the last 10 years was pointing to empty without ever being used. Glad I noticed it.

I always have one mounted by the shop door. That way if I have to run for the extinguisher I will be running for the exit, and when I turn to fight the fire I will have the exit to my back.

It's good to have another one by the welder but I find a squirt bottle of water handier, and cheaper.

In the last 50 years I have needed an extinguisher 3 or 4 times but use the squirt bottle nearly every time I weld something.

  19. I have 2 in my garage, I take them to the local safety equipment shop and have them checked out when the charge starts to drop. HRP

Almost burned my 34 coupe up in the garage. I had an extinguisher and put the fire out. Tip them upside down once in awhile so the powder doesn’t pack.

No shop or garage should be without at least one.
1 in a work area, and 1 by the exit/entrance door.
I have 20 pounders in my garages.
They should be checked at least every couple of years by a certified fire extinguisher company.
You should eyeball the gauge at least once a week, just in case you need it in a hurry!
Just my experience and thoughts on the subject.

Yep, like insurance. You never want to use but when you do, it's there!;)

  25. It's a no brainer.

  26. Have four small ones in the garage. Another 2 1/2 gal water that I put soap and water in to kill the wasps. Shoots a long way.

I have two in the shop and a few under the sinks in the kitchen and bathrooms just in case.
I do not bother recharging them I find it faster to just replace them with New ones.

How about smoke detectors in the garage? You should have one!
I also have an alarm system with camera's installed.

Alway have fire extinguishers in my shop and home. Have several different types. The dry powder are good but make a mess. I have collected several water extinguishers. Good for some fires but not all.....cheap and easy to clean up!

I have 3 on the wall and a loose one that I bring over to where I’m cutting or welding. Never needed it, but that’s what I do.

  30. I have several, of different types. If you have a fire in a confined area, like an engine bay, a CO2 extinguisher is mighty handy, as you won't be cleaning up afterwards. Just make sure the place is ventilated. Also, a fire blanket is good for smothering small fires. There are charts to show you what type of extinguisher to use with different type fires (fuel, electrical, etc). Using the wrong type of extinguisher can be useless or make it worse.
