Sandpaper is cheap. Gotta' scuff and lever that jell coat or you have nothing. I don't actually have to do that much sanding on the putty, it's pretty close when I'm done putting it on. Get artistic with it. Also found if you hit it when it's still a little "green" you can get rid of the ridges and bumps a lot faster than waiting for it to completely cure and then start sanding on it. Knock the high spots down then let it cure to really sand it. Saves a lot of time. I like to do thin layers and sneak up on it so I'm not sanding a ton of material. I do need to sweep the floor, all that sticky back sandpaper I drop is starting to stick to the bottom of my boots!

Fill sand prime, fill sand prime, over, and over again, seems like It will never end! Been there done that! lol
The painting is a piece of cake. You’re prep is the most important part of the job. Once again you’re doing a great job!

Another advantage to your use of thin layers of filler, is the fact that pinholes will be greatly reduced. The thicker you go, the more heat is generated when it kicks off, enlarging the inevitable air pockets, resulting in more, and larger, pinholes in the filler.

Thanks for the kind words and advice guys. Air bubbles and pinholes are about nonexistent with this method.

Had another sleepless night so mudding it was! Right behind the door was the only low area and it was shallow. Couple light coats brought that up nicely and the rest of the quarter was great once it was blocked out. Can’t go any further on this side until the door is back on and the body is mounted on the frame again. Then I can address gaps and lines across those joints. Quarter came out nice.

Spending the rest of today chasing parts so maybe I can start the other quarter when I’m not sleeping tonight!

It's a long way from Iowa to Oregon but I would have let you use my poor mans' rotisserie for the underside work on your cars' body, many shoulder and neck surgeries dictated building this a mandatory approach at doing a lot of the work I can't afford to pay for.
It's also worked well as a built in storage/roll around type dolly.
Food for thought for your next project.

Little bit of progress today. Finished up the left quarter to the trunk lid and below the belt line. That’s all been worked with 120 grit, filler as needed then had a round of 320 paper on it and my final coat of fill primer. Will still need work across the door openings so no need to go any further until the body is bolted back down on the frame. If it’s gray it’s basically done!

Tomorrow (or tonight if I don’t sleep again) I start on the right quarter.

Cowl vent day! Figured there was no more putting it off. Back to work on the cowl vent.

Masked around the actual vent to cut down on the area that could get mud on it and saved a lot of sanding (shared some of these pics in the thread on the "bodywork, getting a panel straight" thread so might see some twice). Also cut out the gap between the vent and cowl while the putty was still pliable. Saves a LOT of sanding. Things learned thru the years when you can remember to use them!

Worked the whole area where the gasket sits down inside the cowl and the vent seals when closed. Not a great place to sand, no room and most of it will never bee seen again. Had to be done! One of the areas I had been dreading is done! I have photographic proof if anyone asks if I really worked that area!

Got the entire cowl top sanded and ready for primer. Still a bit of mud work to do in a few small areas but the majority of it is done. Grandkids both have soccer games tonight so this is pretty much it for the day!

Tomorrow the vent and cowl gets finished and guess I'll have to start detail work on the bottom of the floor pan again.

You know the drill. Why waste time sleeping when there is sanding to be done? This pretty well finishes the cowl. Need to bolt it all back together and make sure everything lines up still. Need to let it sit for the day and dry.

Have you got a cowl vent gasket? I used a Bob Drake one and the vent sat about 1/8" above the cowl line. Ended up cutting one out of thinner rubber to solve the problem. Have heard that Vintique ones don't fit the hole properly also.

I was thinking the same thing. On the one I put together (steel body) the gasket made it sit 1/8" high. Probably could have sanded down the gasket, but I didn't. I will on the next one.

Mine came with the correct gasket to fit the New Age Motorsports opening. Think it's a Vintique. Worked fine with the UP steel vent cover I switched to (after I slotted a few holes and made that little shim for the mounting surface). It's been in place all the time I've worked the fit and finish on the cowl vent. I covered it with thin, cheap masking tape so it wouldn't get mudded in. I'm also adjusted all the way up so I know it won't get any higher, can only go lower.

I pronounce this cowl vent lid and top of cowl project done (for now). Very happy with the finish (it had the gasket laying under it in these photos but not glued in yet). That's pretty much everything I can do below the belt line. Now we have to get the body back on the frame when it's done in paint. Going to do a little preliminary work in the door jambs where the molds come together and left small imperfections and scuff the trunk jamb but I'm about to the point I need the body on the frame to finish door gaps. Have a couple days work under the floor to finish, too. Hopefully the frame is painted by the time I'm done with those items.

Spent the balance of the day working on the trunk rain gutter area, quarter windows and started cleaning up the door jambs. Almost no flat surface except the tiny steps in the door jambs. Lots of weird sanding blocks today.

Have a good friend with 6 or 7 Chitwood Thrill Show cars. They’ve put on a few shows with some of Chitwood’s original drivers. Harley Davidson caught wind of it and contacted him. They wanted one of the cars for their thrills and racing display they are doing this fall. They sent a truck to haul the car to Milwaukee. Just happened to stop by his shop as they were loading the car today. Trailer already had a “Sphere of Death” and 2 of the motorcycles they ride inside the steel ball, already loaded. Off topic but kind of strange and fun way to spend an hour today.

Finished the left quarter window area and door jamb about half done.

Looking at the trunk rain gutter. It’s just ugly. Thick, thin, up, down....just ugly. Break out the DA later and see if I can make myself itch. The gutter itself is great. Will take very little to finish it. The side exposed to the inside of the trunk is where it’s nasty.

Broke out the DA this afternoon. Had to improve the trunk side of that rain gutter. Got rid of a big glob of fiberglass in one area on each side then generally shaped the whole thing. Made a spreader that fit the final shape I’m after and laid on a couple layers of kitty hair to build up the really low areas. Then my first layer of mud. Starting to look much better. Tomorrow we’ll try to get it finished.

More work on the rain gutters tonight. Think I’m about down to a couple very small low areas and glaze. 1000% improvement. Pretty uniform roll on the bottom edge all the way around and consistent crown and thickness.

Also knocked out a bit more door jamb cleanup.

Shooting for finishing the door jambs and rain gutter in the trunk tomorrow.

    Thanks!

We're lucky we have 3 cats, 2 indoors and 1 outdoor/indoor/shop/resident assassin. They are all shedding so it's a good time to be doing this. :)

We're only doing this once, better get it right. This is why I usually drive my stuff in primer, I'm too picky for body work. I can do it but I can't quit until I'm to the point of being able to walk away and not have regrets.

Glad you enjoy the build, it's been a lot of fun and very satisfying so far.

Crazy Ethyl the Assassin. (Notice the dead bunny by the door, she kills anything that moves and eats it). IMG_2186.JPG
