Been doing a little of this and that lately. Not a ton of progress, just undoing some of the previous owners art. He liked the hot wrench. A few random pics.

He is intrigued with the historical aspects of the truck. He decoded the vin# to see where it was built. Kind of a weird deal. The truck is titled as a 58, the vin says late 57 and the paint code shows to be only available in 59. Not that it matters, just interesting.

Agreed, cool. I believe a young person has a much greater chance of enjoying this old junk if the history sparks something in them. For that matter, even an old person, haha

Some progress today. Colby showed up and put 8 hard, dirty hours in. He blasted the cab and we sprayed the bottom side with bedliner. Tomorrow we should get the cab in primer and back on the chassis.

Found some more of the previous owners artwork. Sculpturing to be exact. Cab corners are on order.

Do not mean to preach , but teaching should involve safety too. Even though he is out side a resperator really should be used when ever someone is spraying or sand blasting anything. I didn't when I was younger and wish I had. My lungs are okay, but not what they could be. You guys are doing a great job. Larry

What was the color for the paint code? Just curious.

He has a full face respirator he uses when he blasts. In Oklahoma the wind blows 30 mph daily (seriously) so, fumes are not an issue.

It was a black. Can't remember the exact code. Funny thing is that we haven't found any black on the truck. I am beginning to think we have a hodge podge of pieces. Even the plate could have been from another truck.

Looks like the previous owner was a lot of things but...........welder wasn't one of'em!
I can vouch for that OK. wind!!! My goodness even the trees grow leaned to one side!
Looks like y'all are having a lot of fun with the old truck. Once the "tear apart" and re-furbishing is over the fun will really start!
    Go get'em buyz!!

5D2B5689-EC2A-4464-BDE8-DD14A570418F.jpeg Personally, I would NOT rely on the wind to keep my lungs safe. Besides, even if there's plenty of wind there won't ALWAYS be! 51 Merc is right - teach him good habits he will follow all his life instead of starting him off lax and he'll do that later too.

My truck had those same lousy rusted-out rear cab corners and I literally stopped counting at FIFTY holes in my firewall. I filled them all but if he's going for a more stock appearance then not quite that much work will be required. Fortunately, it never had a hot wrench taken to it. It hardly had ANY damage from work, just rust in the corners. Bed was so good I used the original sides, tailgate and fenders. Hardly any body work required. Only front panel had some rust out in bed roll and repops are cheap - $79.

My exterior is now finished and though it's now OT for the HAMB I'm proud of it and maybe he'll get some inspiration from it.

Good to see him staying with it!

Found some nasty rust in the cab corners. Changing the inner and outer structure. These repop parts don’t fit for crap.
More pics as we gain ground.

Maybe not, but it's better than starting from scratch (right)?! When I did mine, they didn't make the piece around where the lower hinge attaches. I recreated it along with some front floor pieces and they turned out pretty good. Back then I didn't even have a mig so it seemed like it took forever to do anything. I know that the elders will be there when the going gets tough and keep this going forward. Keep up the great work, Carp.

Ok, well a little update. The cab corners are pretty much done, trimmed the inner fenders to match the subframe, repaired the giant hole in the dash and we got the first coat of epoxy primer laid down.

Unfortunately, the shop heater is running wide open to keep up. It’s drying very slowly.......

Looking good. Glad to see kids involved. My son started his car at 15 and had it done when he got his license.

The oldest grandson just turned 13, he has been helping me on the hot rod over the years, header welding when he was 8, body work at 12.

Keep up the great job you guys.

If you are keeping up on the "trash in my paint " thread, this is sort of a repeat.
We ended up sanding down everything we did, due to bad activator. It solvent popped like nobody's business.

Here area few pics of the dash repair we had to perform. Someone had done some really bad hacking. I found an old dash from a fellow hamber and cut the pieces out of it and transferred the pieces. Sorry the pics are all out of order.

My nephew is kinda of cut from the resto rod cloth. He likes the idea of stock looks with modern driveline. oVkzeT8kRNWfWE%pHg9YkA.jpg BQLXN868SHmJoHexk4rl7Q.jpg dAeo3nFMQbyksST+0QRSxA.jpg V4nJWA+8TSa3n58PMJJ7Ew.jpg WQBjG0krR2mpjGDis4ZFGg.jpg SVjRjzsOSjijBRryLGnwhw.jpg yhRYwSsHSnWqS3YZi0jbEA.jpg 8PJiizObQtaH%fE4bkmF7Q.jpg

Yeah, that was just the initial notching. We still have to finesse all of that area.

FF626A86-A899-4700-A12A-9E41CF08A5C1.jpeg Been a while since I updated this thread. We have been pounding out dents and a lot of little stuff.

We decided to paint the firewall a semi gloss black since it was still pretty rough. My nephew is not really looking for a lot of shiny paint. He’s a “close enough” guy.

We stabbed the motor and tranny. It fits good. We moved the motor basically forward about an inch with the Camaro subframe. We have rebuilt the brakes, relocated the master cylinder and booster under the floor, bled the brakes and found every leak in the system. Good pedal now.

Not a lot of visible progress, this pic basically sums it up.
