Event Coverage Knoxville, Tennessee Nats South

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by HOTRODPRIMER, Mar 11, 2019.

  1. I hadn’t been to the Knoxville show in a couple years, but the attendance was half or less what it was the last time I was there. I attribute it to the GG show and the weather. Sucks that the two shows were on the same weekend for sure.

  2. Went to Knoxville in the late 90s. Best hot rod show I have ever attended. Bought a yblock 3 deuce intake cheap.
There were over 4K cars registered if memory is correct.
Worked on a couple of Verns cars. He seemed to be an ok guy.

if they don't work together not to step on each others toes, it will be a demise of one or the other.

We went to Tupelo for Blue Suede this weekend, our registration number was 707, but there were nowhere near that many cars there, maybe 300 or so. There were more there yesterday afternoon than today, and Saturday is always the largest. The weather was threatening rain all day after a early morning batch of showers moved through around daylight. We left about 3PM just as the rain moved back in. I think the forecast scared off a lot of the beauty queens afraid to get their cars wet. We drove home in the rain all the way, no big deal....

Had to bail on Tupelo due to business meeting. I'll try it again sometime. I'm not sure that the powers to be at Titian Stadium are all that keen on car shows.

Neither one thinks about that happening. Each is trying to move their own agenda and that is all they think of

I went to Knoxville for swap meet Friday. . It was weak. Even the new parts vendors outside seemed to be sleepy. I wish I had gone to Redneck Rumble. Times are changing. I recall the old days when it was packed.

Yeah this is what i was told also. I was hoping that GG wasn't going Head to Head with Knoxville. I figure after Nashville Had 300,000 folks for the draft, the car show was small taters.

  10. Heard the same, that GG's was given part of the parking lot and when it was full, sorry Charlie.
Planning GG's and NSRA on the same weekend just doesn't make sense to me.
    Highest # I saw was 1191.
Another rumor circulating Knoxville was that GG's was offering to buy out NSRA event in two years.

  11. Too bad we can’t just have 2 good shows! Maybe one as a season opener in May and another as a season closer in August?

Granted the likelihood that I am going to travel from Portage Wisconsin to Knoxville Tennessee to attend a car show is not going to happen but if I lived with in traveling distance and was think of maybe attending this show and read these post, I would say " this show must suck!", and would say to hell with it. And so a so called sucky show is going to get suckier. I can't believe nobody had a good time and did not take pictures. If you want shows to survive in your area you have to support them. Good guys and NSRA try to put shows on here in Wisconsin, but if you where not a member it cost you about 80 bucks to enter your car because you had to buy a years membership and they where charging 12 or 15 bucks a head for spectators and that was 12 or 13 years ago at least. It would have been one thing if you where talking 2 or 3 thousand cars or drag racing like the old GG Indy show. But these shows where lucky if they toped 5 or 600 and the Good guys final shot was in Madison at the Dane county fair grounds and Madison is the most un friendly car city in the state! The real sad part for me and my car club { Dells Area Cruisers, out of Wi Dells is that Madison is only about a half hour cruise and the NSRA was in Milwaukee at State Fair Park and is under 2 hours. About 20 of us attended every show but word got around about the cost and they just died off. Hope you guys continue to give Knoxville another shot! It would be a shame to keep seeing these shows disappear because once their gone , their gone for good. Larry

You guys need to understand that the forecast for several days in advance of both events was for a really bad front to move through with thunder, lightning and, potentially, hail. I went to Nashville in spite of that and most did not. The weather didnt turn out as badmas was forecasted but its completely understandable why a lot of people just cancelled their plans. Better luck next year, I hope and I hope these two events get some separation. Neither organization want to put on a bad event. Hopefully, they will communicate a little.

Yeah he is right.Weather guys were talking heavy stuff for the complete south. Lets hope next year things work out better. But i got to really wonder about Nashville. I forgot about 2 years ago they started a marathon run right in the middle of the the morning rush to get in.makes one wonder.....

You had four events all within a couple hundred miles of each other plus bad weather. All at the same time. Ain't nobody going to win with a deal like that.

Weather is always a factor in the spring in the South. Hard to set a date in April or May a year ahead of time and know what the weather might be doing. First five or six times I went to Tupelo it rained at least on one day of that weekend. You expect it to rain but hope for sunshine. I don’t let it bother me, I drive my stuff, if it gets dirty, I clean it.

  19. I hope that my comments have not come off as trash talking the show....I only stated that it is horrible that GG and NSRA shows we’re the same weekend, cutting any participation in half. My boys and I had a great time, as we would at any show. And now for PICS!

  21. Totally different perspective, from some one that can't get out and go, it's the cars & the people that make any event, rod run, car show or cruise in enjoyable.

Was the Nats South as big as previous years, No it wasn't but that didn't stop people from attending,

Granted, the vendors were way down, the women's world was suffering and the swap meet was the smallest I have ever seen but you had 2 events trying to lure in the same hot rodders & custom guys.

The rain is something no one can control and we contend with it every year, but the people I talked to were enjoying themselves and about everyone I talked to mentioned 2 event's at the same time didn't help.

I was able to put some faces to some Hamb names and talk with a bunch of Hambers I already know., that's a successful weekend right there as far as I'm concerned.

Saturday afternoon I was happy the Hot Rod Repair crew from Michigan were on hand, I lost my tail lights and need to get the car up high enough to get under it and remove the pressure switch, this is about the time the skies darkened and the bottom fell out, Brenda & I both went looking for a old fashion in line pressure switch she found one and was on her way back to the car when I approached a young lady at the trailer and was about to buy a switch and the man said don't sell it to him, "There can't possibly be two people here that need that particular switch with in 5 minutes of each other, he said your wife just left with one."

So, I did a old man runnin' in the rain back across the parking lot to the area where the Michigan guys were set up only to find one of them had crawled under the car and put the switch back in while I was on my way back.

I was all too happy to stuff some cash in their donation box, Driving in Knoxville with no brake lights on I-40 is like playing Russian roulette.

There were rumors floating around that this was the last year for Knoxville, but at the awards Will Seibel announced the contract was signed and they were returning to Knoxville again next year.

I'll go back next year, this is how Brenda & I celebrate our wedding anniversary every year! :) HRP

That 56 Packard is local to me. It is a really nice car that Larry Woodall built for its owner. I always enjoy looking at it.
