  5. It appears that it has a bad transmission leak. It looks too dry everywhere else to just be water.

    Hello,

Not to be confused with the nearby Balboa Pier where the old Rendezvous Ballroom used to be located, this photo is taken from the Newport Pier, just up a couple of miles up the coast. The world famous “Dory Fleet” has been an icon for many years. It is a California protected portion of So Cal history.

“The Dory Fishing Fleet and Market is a beach side fishing cooperative located in the city of Newport Beach, California. It was founded in 1891 at the base of what was then McFadden Wharf, now known as the Newport Pier. The Dory Fleet, a registered historical landmark, is considered the last beach side cooperative of its kind in the United States.”

“The market has seen its share of ups and downs. Two of its members have been lost at sea, and tight new regulations designed to protect some over fished species have made it tough for fishermen to make a living. But today, the market is thriving, and so are the hardy survivors who make it happen.”

“The Dory Fleet Market had its beginning in late 1891 when an enterprising fisherman tired of selling his fish to the wholesalers began marketing to the public on the beach. The Dory Fleet Market, located alongside the Newport Pier, still has its unique Old World charm. This unique market makes one reflect on an era when life was simpler. The Newport Beach Historical Society recognized the fleet as a permanent local historical landmark dedicated June of 1969.”

Our history goes back to 1959-60 when we tried to surf in the good waves just north of the fleet. When those guys row out or back in, it is very hectic. They are a protected part of So Cal history, so they take precedence over the surfers in the water. So, we had to paddle/walk farther north to another good surf break within sight of the Newport Beach Pier. Want the freshest fish in this part of So Cal? This is the place.

Newport Beach Pier, not the Balboa Pier. Over the years, the small shops, the paved parking lots, the surf break has brought plenty of surfers to the area. The waves are pretty good all during the year, but are extremely dangerous during the Summer, Hurricane swells from the Mexican coastline farther south.

By the way, the original, famous, Crab Cooker Restaurant is on the main drag leading to the Newport Pier and the Dory Fleet. It is closed now for foundation repair, but will open sometime in 2019. It is a short walk from the pier. (to the far right)
"The structure at the corner of Newport Boulevard and 22nd Street was built in 1938 and has been occupied by the Crab Cooker since 1951. Before that it was a Bank of America (the vault is now the restaurant’s refrigerator)."
