    Looking back at some old threads and spotted this picture which brought back a lot of memories.

    This picture was taken at Phenix Dragway in Phenix City, Al. Looking at the crowd it must have been taken at the '68 or '69 NHRA divisional. John Tharpe owned the car at that time (he recently passed away) and drove it most of the time but Tommy Whitaker also drove it some. John bought the car from M.L. Tomlin and I drove it some when he owned it, it already had the Red Light Bandit name when John bought it. It was a 283 two barrel four speed car and was fun to race. Sadly M.L. and Tommy have also passed away.

    For sure a lot of us were the drive to the track, open the headers, put on your slicks, race type. Then hope you don't break something so you could drive home. :)

    What's the story on the 57? Is it going to be restored to it's Jr. Stock heritage? Is it in storage? Or???

    Same owner still has it. Plans are to bring it back to life. Under side picture is of the Stahl single ladder bar set up.

    Correct. :) IF it was a NHRA track. Way back then there were a lot of different classes at different strips and organizations that had their own classifications. But more than likely C/SA would be right.
     
  24. Not complaining on this one, LB. I believe this was a former Junior Stocker that got caught up in the NHRA slaughter in 1972..Actually a SS/W 2bbl. 170 car here.
    Same story on the purple 57 a few posts back.

    Yes. Myself and two others had a 62 SS/W Chevy!

    Tom Kidd's '57 210, 270hp wagon. Seen frequently during '66 & '67 mostly at Vargo and Maple Grove. Photo just found during Mom's, my wife of some 55 yrs, desk clean out. Only photo I have. Any others out there?? Ran '66 in primer, then Foster's Goodyear Tire painted it for '67. It won the Jr. Stock Eliminator at the '67 Atco Finale AHRA/NASCAR Meet and it also got me Maple Grove's Mechanic of the year award. Roger Sinistri got it the following year. It managed one 12.98 at Cecil and a handful of 13.0's in good night time air. Consistently under the '66 13.36 record. Ahhhhh, Great Memories!
    Jenkins tore me down after I drove past the fuel check at Stanford, Maine (accidentally buried ET record). The car was impounded and found its way to Lee Cruppi's in Reading, Pa., two weeks later I got it back, it was 'all apart' and found to be legal. Jenkins said "runs pretty good for junk'. It had Thompson pistons, ran 5:38's, 15" A140's, and of course a set of Stahl's. Sold it to build a '57 delivery, and quit when NHRA rules changed and outlawed my Jenkins un-assembled 0.054" over Forgetrue motor. I still have the un-assembled motor complete right down to the Tony P. heads. Finally sold the delivery a few years ago to a fellow in Va. It is now a beautiful black well restored '57 with a '327 4 spd.
