Went looking for another project to keep me busy. Looked at another 40 coupe, a 41 pickup and a 35 3 window to do my style. Undecided-kinda like the 35-36 3 window -has both front clips and is complete. Just finished a 40 std coupe and a 39 woody and on the hunt again. Have done many 40's but the 3 window is unfamiliar to me. As to desirability which way shall I go-might be fun to try something new. Are they in the league of a nice 40?? Appreciate any advice/input cause I gotta get something to do. May buy the pickup as well and just stash for now.
Mho is the 3 window is rarer beast, but buyers might appreciate it for the gasser look . Resale ease would be ; 1) 40 Coupe 2) '41 pick up 3) 3 window. But if you have the itch for different, then 3 window it is. Fit and finish level would, I surmise the resale price.
In my book a 36 3W and a 40 Coupe are the best of the fat fendered Fords. You can't go wrong building either. And resale of either should be fairly easy (within reason). But build what trips your trigger. Go for the 3W if you're getting bored with the 40's.
There were 2 40 Ford coupes offered at auction in my town last week. I did not want either one regardless of price. . Both sold over my high bid estimate. In discussion with other car guys there it was discussed what were the most desirable Ford coupes were and pricing. It seemed that most felt 33 and 34's were the most desirable, followed by 32's. With desire and pricing being very close. Next were 39 Deluxe and 40's. With pricing being slightly less. Then the next was specifically 36 3-window priced as much as 40's and possibly being more desirable then 40's and priced the same. Followed by 35 3-window. The guys there did not seem to care about 3 or 5 windows on the earlier cars. It did matter greatly on the 35 and 36. Just a general observation of the crowd that day.
I'd give double for a 36 3w in comparable condition of a 40. But you better have all the parts, cause they are tough to find.
THX all-the 3 window has all the parts and is ready for paint-has both 35 and 36 front clip. Was missing an inside garnish molding but found it-big $$ for that. top unfilled, trunk not rumble seat-nice fenders bumpers etc etc. Still thinking on it--done a lot of 40's but not a 36-might give it a try. My style-axle, 327. stock color etc etc. same as I do 40's
Since you have done so many 40’s it’s about time for a change. A 36 3-window is a great alternative. Make sure it comes with 36 rear fenders too. They are different and the guys that care can tell from 100 feet away. If they are missing you will pay dearly for them.
The opinion of that group doesn’t really reflect current market trends and pricing. Original ‘32 3 Windows that are unchopped and unfilled bring the most money of any early Ford coupe period. Then ‘33-‘34 3 Windows, then ‘35-‘36 3 Windows, then ‘32-34 & ‘39-‘40 5 Windows and lastly and by a good margin ‘35-‘38 5 Windows. I have seen that any ‘32-‘36 3 Window coupe will bring more than any ‘32-‘40 5 Window all else being equal.
There's 2 cars I have never "lusted" over, a Deuce of any kind and a '40 Ford, that leaves only one left!
I like the ‘36 three window as much as ‘40 coupes. To me they share the same level of desirability. If you build the ‘36 to the same level of quality and style you do the ‘40’s, in my opinion, you can’t go wrong. The frame is basically the same ‘35-‘40 so you are already on track with that.
36 3/W all the parts paint ready Check please!!! Those are BIG check boxes filled. How many 36 3/W's are for sale in that stage/condition? Not many. You've done a zillion 40's, can build them in your sleep. You're getting older. 36 3/W is a beautiful car, sought after and would be no problem to sell off later if you wanted. If the price is right, I'd say go for it before someone else buys it! Build a running chassis (same routine as your 40's) , do the paint, then start assembling it.
Is there anything else? I've never been all that excited about 36 Fords but I could see myself in a 36 three window. Of course with a 327 and a Muncie!
Nice 40’s are every where these days and I love em all, but a 36 three window done your style will stand out everywhere. I would love to own one.
