One of the saddest things was the destruction of the Pike in Long Beach. It was the first amusement park in So Cal for all families. The early opening was in 1902. Our local high school had history with this park. We met some real “old guys” (in their 70s from our high school back in 1961 at a reunion.) They had some great stories of their days at the Pike.

“Long Beach Polytechnic High School, founded in 1895 as Long Beach High School, is a public high school located at 1600 Atlantic Avenue in Long Beach, California, United States. The school serves portions of Long Beach, including Bixby Knolls, and some parts of the cities of Signal Hill and Lakewood. Polytechnic (more commonly known as Poly) is the flagship high school of the Long Beach Unified School District."

The huge Cyclone Racer (1930) started its destruction in 1968 and the rest of the park was disassembled and gone by 1980.

“The decline of the midway – of the Pike in all its manifestations – were propelled by the city’s plans for redeveloping its downtown and by the Nu-Pike’s owners, who realized that no amount of repainting and dressing up could ever restore the long-ago allure of … The Walk of a Thousand Lights. The Cyclone Racer stopped in September 1968, and that seemed to take much of the life out of the midway.”

Our teenage years at the Pike was cool, just because it was part of our Friday night activities when we were not involved in varsity sports. A bunch of teens would gather and stroll all around the pike. Then, as the evening was drawing to a close, we got our hot rods and cruisers to go down the famous “local” streets (Seaside between Pine and Magnolia St.) on the western end of the whole park complex.

That was an adventure, for sure. Vocal clashes with some inebriated sailors and local characters made our day. The “hot rod” exhaust sounds were amplified between the tall buildings on these streets. It was always a cool way to end our night time adventures at the Pike.

Today, there is a PIKE, but in name only. "You can't go home, again."

I rode my bicycle there many times in my youth !

 

I used to go to the city hall building frequently on business. I remember there were portraits of past mayors and other city officials hanging on various walls throughout the building. I'm sure I've seen his portrait before as he looks very familiar to me.
