    Picture needs to be reversed. Looks funny seeing Santa Fe Ave. running east and west.

    The Aussie Pontiacs had 283 SBC with a 2cg carby, that was all you could get. :)

    Like most Australians I believed that the Holden was totally designed and produced in Australia. I was surprised to find out that that was totally untrue.

    According to a book that I have on the history of the Holden, "Special The Untold Story of Australia's Holden" by John M Wright all the design and development was done in the USA and the basis of the FX Holden was the late 30's /early 40's German Opel (Olympia).
    Chapter 4 in this book gives all the detail of development IN USA. The concept was based on a shelved project called 195-Y-15 but later named the 195-Y25. Holden styling was done by Frank Hershey who was one of Harley Earls most trusted lieutenants. Lloyd Hartnett was the head honcho of GM Australia in the 30's early 40's. he did have a lot of input into what would be needed for Australian conditions.

    I recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in the Holden car and its development.

    If a 389 tri-power indicated by emblems it wasn't a regular RHD export as all export Canadian RHD Pontiacs (Oshawa, Ontario) were only available with 261ci I6 engine, it's definitely a rare car, special order, personal import, Diplomatic? I'd like to know more on this one. ;)

    GM Diplomatic sales also offered both LHD and RHD (Tarrytown, New York) which had “DOM” prefixing “RHD” instead of “EXP”. Insofar as US cars were concerned, RHD equipment was an “ACCessory” that appeared on build plates. Some US produced cars were sold to Embassies and Diplomatic missions abroad. As well other exports included single unit pack (SUP) to Australia and New Zealand. In addition, dealers and Diplomats also imported SUP cars. Records indicate that a single late production SUP car was imported to Australia and fitted with a 283ci V8 engine as a pilot (Test) car.
    • All Canadian CKD cars imported into New Zealand were assembled locally and were either Chevrolet Bel Air 4-Door Sedans or 4-Door Pontiac Laurentians, both with 283ci engines.
    • Up until 1959 the GMH assembled CKD Chevrolets and Pontiacs from Canada only came with I6 engines (235ci Chevrolet and 261ci Pontiac) and Powerglide transmissions. However, 1960 models were offered with 283ci V8 engines and Powerglide transmissions. Both Chevrolet and Pontiac bodies were assembled locally at Woodville manufacturing plant in Adelaide, South Australia as well as other assembly plants in other states.
    National sales figures respectively for Chevrolet(6) and Pontiac(6) were:-
    • 1959:: 1723, 245 including some 1958 Models; and
    • 1960: 684, 81.

    1959 was the last 6 cylinder for Aussie assembled Chev & Pontiacs. All '60 models had 283's. The badge on that one is correct.

    COCONUTS

    B-36, at the time and for a long time after the largest bomber. They use to say, "six turning and four burning". This must be an air force base in Texas. They would fly out of Texas, head right for the Russian boundary, make a turn, fly over Alaska, then south back to Texas. I think the whole trip took about 40 hours. My father who was a Flight Engineer on the B-36, would say, just drilling holes in the sky.
