Hot Rods M/T valve covers seem kinda cool again.

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Rocky, Apr 13, 2019.

  1. In the early 80s I ran a pair of M/T aluminum valve covers on my old 56 Pontiac with a 389 but didn't really care for them....I even milled off the M/T and filled the flat part with a pair of 421 tags taken off a 63 Catalina.
Since then I've probably owned and sold 5 more pairs of those Pontiac M/T valve covers.
Then, the other day I saw a pair of them on the HAMB classifieds and I thought they looked great...bought them. I guess my tastes have changed. I plan to replace the Chinese [not traditional] ebay finned covers with the M/T covers.
Is it just me or have some parts that we previously didn't like become more appealing? M_Tvalvecovers.jpg

I bought some Micky Thompson valve covers off Ebay a few years ago. They were in the original boxes with a GM part number. No indications on the outside but inside, it says Micky Thompson and has the GM part number. These are going on to my V8 Corvair

    Oh, it's not you Rocky!
Isn't it kind of the foundation of what we are all about.
I've always been a sbc guy, so of course I've had M/T valve covers, can't say I'm that excited about them nowadays, but it's the bbc versions that really work for me, that's what you would find on my big block if I had one.

I'm a huge fan of Mickey Thompson. I have a couple of sets of the early MTs in my Pontiac valve cover collection. Pretty sure these came off his 4 engine streamliner...…..or maybe not...

  7. Jeff....the covers to the right of your photo [no M/T logo] are the Pontiac covers I've seen in photos of Micky's streamliner..I'd love to have a pair of those for my Pontiac motor...betcha I'll never find a pair. Love the fins all the way down to the flange.

I tried to do that, too, but they seem to have shrunk with age. Shoddy workmanship, I'd guess.

Yes! MTs on a BBC are tits! SBCs not so much. Got em on my grimey daily just because they were 10 bucks.

I've got a pair of M/T's on the SBF in my Comet. I like them on certain engines, others not so much. I've always wished the M/T was centered and the fins were all the way across instead of that blank space though.

I knew you'd warm up to them. Here's the later SBF MT's on my '31. I like the look but sometimes want something a little different. When I want a more "traditional" look I go to Weiands. Give it a different kind of hot rod look.

And I have a few pairs also, for the SBC. Including one pair of staggered bolt pattern ones; they look a little odd with the staggered bolt pattern and how they're machined for clearance. The oddest thing is, on the inside, they say for Chev 327 (?). Mister Terrific valve covers; we all had to have a pair. I am Butch/56sedandelivery.

Hey Rocky , what's Old is New again. Don't know how else to explain it! There is a 60's pic of an injected Pontiac (in a digger) burned into my memory. Has the stacks flared and pointed into the air flow, the short zoomy headers are done in a like manner, but rearward. All chrome and polished, nicely detailed.
Never had anything but factory chrome covers on my GTO, but have some M/T covers that were on my 289 powered T bucket. Thanks for the memories, Carp.
