The idea of a extinguisher is great but it has to be mounted very carefully. I mounted mine high on my roll bar behind me like most guys do. Bad idea. I ended up in a head on accident one day. The extinguisher broke the mount and became a flying projectile in the car. It broke my glasses and almost my jaw. I couldn't bite down straight for weeks with all the swelling. It hit the windshield and broke it. So the point is don't add a piece of safety equipment to only put yourself in more danger. Mount it with a strong mount and position it carefully. Be prepared for all accidents not only a fire. Learn from my mistake.

 

I carry a large household type of fire extinguisher in the back seat of our cars, after seeing Randy's roadster go up in flames I learned the small extinguishers run out before the flames are extinguished. HRP

 

Here's an interior shot where the upholstery guy made a box specifically to hold the fire extinguisher. It's behind the seat in my '32 and easily accessible.

 

Does anyone have any bracketry and clamps that are better than the plastic stuff the bottle comes with? I'm guessing racers use a heavy duty clamp that won't jiggle loose. Any sources?

 

Nothing would put that fire out......but it wood be fun trying...

 

A local extinguisher service company should be able to get them, or ebay, depends on the size bottle you have. Just try to get a steel one, and mount it with ALL the screw hole's.

Hunkering down there by the shifter. I can reach it while strapped in.
The idea of a trunk mounted spare is appealing.

 

Good idea. I push a lot of burning brush with my MF3165, hydraulic fluid is pretty flammable. I will put one on tomorrow.

I mounted mine down low on the front of the driver's seat. I cannot remember the brand name of the adjustable bracket but it fastens to the front bolts of the seat.

My thinking is that if I hit a solid object at 50 mph that fire extinguisher will suddenly weigh three or four hundred pounds so I don't think any bracket will hold it. So......I'd rather have the fire extinguisher bounce off my foot than off the side of my head.

 

Thanks for chiming in, I was hoping you would. I've thought about that ever since I read your thread, but not everybody has read it, so it's good to get the word out there. I will definitely be keeping this in mind during any installation I do.

 

In the cramped space of the Track Roadsters I build, the floor in front of the passenger seat works well.

 

Inside the car: Easy access. Often limited room = limited extinguisher size, that may not do much good. Risk of coming loose in an accident, causing injury or worse. May be an eyesore in a otherwise clean interior.

In the trunk: Slower access, assuming you sit in the car. (Just as easy if you are outside the car, and fires don't only happen while you're sitting down or driving.) Plenty of room for large extinguisher(s), so better chance of getting the fire under control than with a small one. No risk of hitting driver/passenger if it comes loose. Out of sight.

Either position has pros and cons. I'm 37 and so far I've never needed to use a fire extinguisher, so if I put one in a car it'll probably end up in the trunk. Chances are it'll never be used, but having one is better than having nothing, even if it takes a couple of seconds extra to grab it compared to one put in a location where it may be a bit too much in the way for everyday use of the car.

Everybody chooses where they want their extinguisher, if any.

 

I mounted mine on the seat frame right in front of the seats where i could grab it real fast in case of a emergency. DONT and I mean DONT put that thing in a place where you can't get to it PRONTO. Really, you put all that work, your time and thought and energy, into your Hotrod just to watch it burn to the ground because you HID your fire extinguisher???? Jeezzzz get real guys, just sayin,,, Mitch.
