Hot Rods So I may have found the guy who originally built my 40 as a hot rod in 1958.

I have owned my 40 convert for 48 years now. I was at the local N.A.P.A. store to pick up a brake light switch today. I was driving the 40. There was a guy who runs parts for them standing by my car. He says do you mind if I take a picture my uncle had a car like this back in the late 50s early 60s but his had an olds motor and trans. I said no kidding this car had a 303 olds and hydramatic with an open drive early ford rear end. I asked did they call your uncle Yug . He said yes. All the stories I have heard were that a guy named Yug built this car as a hot rod/ custom back in 1958. When I bought it in 1971 it had 49 buick fenders an tail lights added to the 40 rear fenders shaved hood and deck lid fender skirts and a 51 olds dash cluster with olds vacuum power widows. Well when I was 17 I never took any pictures of the car. Hell why did I need pictures I could see it out the widow. So I asked the guy is Yug still with us . He says yes he,s 80 now he may have so pictures of the car when he owned it. I gave him my number . Now I am waiting for a call. If he comes thru I will post them.

Gary, I remember meeting you years ago at the NSRA NATS SOUTH and you telling me about all the weird custom touches the previous owner did, especially the rear fenders.

This would be amazing if you can connect with the elderly gent, try to get a photo with him standing or sitting in the car. but definitely take him for a ride HRP

I hope it turns out to be the builder and he can be reunited with the car. If it was built in '58 he has to be close to 90...

Well if he was 20 years old in 1958 that would put him at 81 today. I am hoping to find out how old he was then and now.

Do you still have the customized rear fenders in the shed?

I have a friend who's dad bought a customized 36 roadster from out west in the 50's. Packard grille, chopped top, red and white vinyl upholstery, hopped up flathead, 37 Desoto bumpers. My friend inherited the car and when he recently rebuilt it he removed all the custom stuff and returned to stock sheetmetal. It's still a gorgeous car now, but all Henry Ford bodywork.

Yep, and if the 1958 era photo location is in town and recognizable, you may have a terrific chance of reenacting the shot with your car (and Yug) 60 years later! Neat story.

 

Alchemy I do still have those fenders out behind the garage. I gave the tail lights to a friend years ago. I was driving thru town one day and a guy asked me what did you do with those fender skirts? I took them off because I thought they were ugly at the time I sold them to him for $20 probably should have kept them. That was back in 1972.

 

I dug those old fenders out they were pretty much toast after sitting outside for 40 plus years.

 

Yuck, beauty is in the eye of the beer holder, there were many failed attempts at Customizing back in the day of little pages, you liberated the convertible and restored Henry's vision, I have always loved the 40 Convertibles. HRP

 

@40ragtopdown I see from the condition of those fenders that not only are the places we reside round at both ends...Ohio and Ontario the atmosphere is very much similar in destroying vehicles...

Despite that I still look forward to seeing it as Yug had finished his bit of pride and joy way back before you acquired it.
