Hi everyone. Some time ago I bought a GM 10 bolt posi rear axle for my '41 Buick Super coupe. The axle had no brakes. Now that I'm assembling the car I don't know what year model brake kit to buy.. It seems some of the shoe hardware changed every two or three years, espec. the parking brake hardware. Can anyone identify the year model of this rear end? here are the numbers:. on front of right axle tube: "2TX P161D. On the hogshead casting, front, left: 526196-10, and "25" On the hogshead casting, right front, "156. These are all the numbers. It has a round diff. cover with half moon indentations at the 3 and 9 o'clock positions. Thanks for any help. I've search the net for days and can't find any matches. --Paul Smith Raleigh, N.C. There are four (4) versions of 10-bolt GM rear ends: 7.5/7.625, 8.2, 8.5, and 8.6". If yours matches the picture it's a non 'C' clip 28 spline BOP 8.2" either from a:- Oldsmobile Cutlass 1964-1972; Pontiac Firebird 1967-1972; or Pontiac GTO 1964-1972. This a similar 28 spline Chevy 'C' clip' 8.2" 10 bolt.

Hey Stumpy. Thanks! Top pic looks like mine, except mine doesn't have that reinforcing web on the bottom from the housing to the axle housing. Mine does have two parallel webs on either side of the front of the hogshead. Now I can buy my brake kit. Thanks! Paul Smith
In the interest of keeping similar info in one place I'd like to tack my questions onto Paul's 10 bolt post if I may. My roadster has a 10 bolt and I'd like to order some new axles with both Chevy and Olds bolt patterns but I know what will happen when I place that call - they are sure to ask the very question I don't have an answer to. The photos below show the axle, it looks like some mounts have been removed from the top of the casting. The casting # is 383939N, GM8 appears on the other side and ZA 1 30 is stamped on the axle tube, it's 60" wide. I think it's a Chevy 8.2 C-clip rear end but I'm not sure. Any help is appreciated.
here's one that's possible.... 1964 Chevelle ZA 3.08:1 ~ found with Powerglide transmission if I were working on it, I'd pull the cover and see what's stamped on the ring gear, as far as date, and also see what ratio the rear is by turning things and counting
Thanks, it sure drove like 3.08s. The year/model is what I was looking for. I’m vacillating between new axles for this one and bolt it back in or narrow the Olds 9.3 that I have and making new brackets n stuff. I’m recreating a car from my past, it had an Olds engine, 4spd Hydro and Olds rear end. My Halibrands are single pattern -Olds.
