    Hello,

Our 1958 Chevy Impala had the standard 3 carb set up from the factory, it was the 280 hp version of the 348. My brother wanted the top of the line 315 hp high performance set up, but it would take too long to order and arrive as well as cost a lot more than he had at the time. In looking back to those times,in our brotherly conversations, we both wished we had waited for the 315 hp version.

In writing the numbers, it does not seem like much, but, 35 horsepower is a lot of missing horsepower for those big cars. Actually, for any car, who wouldn’t want an additional 35 horsepower? No one in our local Long Beach Bixby Knolls area had a 315 hp 1958 Chevy of any kind. But at the drags, there were a few that showed up at times. Our three carb 280 hp version was plenty powerful for a big sedan, but it was mild compared to what we experienced in a couple of years.

After having been outgunned with the 280 hp, then the flood of 320, 335 hp motors showed up in the class, and finally those big 409s made it impossible to have fun racing. So, we moved on to our next project. It was a 1940 Willys C/Gas coupe with a bigger induction system. Including our old set up of 6 Strombergs on a new Weiand manifold, on top of the 671 supercharger.

Our Reath Automotive new 671 blower, all built for racing specifications, added the final touch to the Isky-Gilmer Belt set up.

What a difference in acceleration and power. 292 SBC with 671 plus other race goodies vs. a 280 hp 348, there was no comparison to the power. Who knew how many horsepower we had with the 292 SBC 671? It just threw us back into the seats with the pedal to the metal, each time. As we all know, it is the acceleration at the beginning that makes us fast.
