  13. Following the example of the mosquito, the Air Corps found that they could convert the P38 to a medium bomber. The perspex nose was for the bombardier, to improve accuracy. Both the mosquito and the P-38 could carry a 4,000 lb bomb load, the same weight as a that of a B-17.
    The modification was done at a base in the UK, and only applied to a small number of the aircraft. The aircraft was often used as the lead bomber, with all the other P-38s dropping on the signal of the lead bombardier.
    Both the mosquito and the P-38 were also used, with great success, for photo reconnaissance.

    Our grandson became an Eagle Scout three years ago which is a pretty rare accomplishment now a days and I think I read somewhere only 2 percent of the population ever achieve that. It was a great ceremony.
