That thing has an awful lot of cylinders for a 4360. Which as a 4 row engine 7 cylinders per row. I don't know what that is. this is a 4360
12 rows? The airframe that was made for this thing would be pretty odd looking, I think. Weight and balance might be problematic.
I considered that too but how would you cool it? Judging by the cooling fins I would say this is an air-cooled engine and a P-39 had a radiator since the Allison engine normally in them was liquid cooled.
Great thread! I love the art of early engineering. Magnificent specimens from the seemingly simple to the intricate and complex. I am almost a little surprised that no one has posted Chrysler's inline 6 Hemi prototype based on the flathead engine of the day. They used it to prove out the hemi concept in passenger cars before tooling up for the V8. Along those same lines - I always chuckled a little bit at the advertisement for the first Hemi in Dodge trucks 133Hp compared to the 136hp found in the "economic" flathead 6 with factory dual carbs and dual exhaust:
This is the very FIRST V8 engine Patented in 1902 by Leon Levavasseur. He had a successful running engine, called the Antoinette V8, in a racing boat by 1904, shortly thereafter in aircraft. Here's whats really amazing about it. It had a simple form of Direct Injection. Note the 8 individual injector units. And it was very light. The picture is of the second generation larger aircraft engine. 110mm bore, 105mm stroke...7.9 ltr. and it weighed only 190 lbs. Making 50hp at 1100 rpm . Its power/weight ratio (normally aspirated) would not be exceeded for 25 years. By geoffrey.gregory
Yup, it looks like an early mechanical injection. Nowadays "direct" injection usually refers to injecting fuel directly into the cylinder at the appropriate time like Diesel engines and the more advanced gasoline fueled auto engines are doing. I do like the staggered stack heights too.
just beautiful... But I always thought those exhaust header pipes would have looked better as solid stainless steel tubes. Those corrugated pipes evoke thoughts of the J.C. Whitney (Warshawsky) catalog to me.
