Technical Inverted Flare Adaptor Needed!

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Crazy Steve, Mar 15, 2019.

  1. Well, I just got a box of goodies from Summit, including one of their carbs. Nice looking piece by the way. I'm going to be a busy boy for more than a few days, and thankfully the weather is turning warmer so my old bones won't ache while I'm in the shop...

Anyway, my problem. The carb comes with a nice chrome dual-inlet fuel line that accepts a 3/8" inverted flare fitting. But my existing line is 5/16"...

The line that's installed is 5/16" and is a hard line from the pump to the existing carb. My hat's off the PO as he did a great job of routing it around everything and the carb end is just about where it needs to be.

After searching the 'net in vain, I was unable to find a reducer from 3/8 male flare to 5/16 female flare. Seems like they make every other combination, just not this one.
Anybody ever run into one of these critters, or am I facing re-running the line in 3/8"?

And no, I'm not going to convert to rubber line, I like the safety of a hard line.

Have you tried your local Ace Hardware? I'm always surprised at the crap I find there.

Maybe two adapters with male and female pipe threads?

Will one line fit inside the other line? If so stick one inside the other and braze together. Or use a punch and spread the bigger tube so the smaller one would fit inside. I have done that before with no problems.

Call Summit and see if they offer an adapter for their carb. You cant be the only one in need.

  6. Search the for the nut diameter and thread count on both ends instead of tubing diameter. I would help more but I don't have Google signal where I am.

  7. Hay guys, they make bushings for this issue if I'm reading this right. So being I'm medicated past comfort zone let's be clear. If you had a piece of tube threaded 5/16" pipe inside and 3/8" pipe outside is that the fix?

  8. Picture this without the Hex,

  9. Try 1\2-20 ifm to 5\8-18 iff

They make flare nuts that will do that, look at some master cylinder flare nuts.

  11. I see the photo didn't like my process. Let me add, I don't like multiple parts stacked together to make One piece. These bushings disappear when installed right. I believe they came out of the Holly parts catalog.

  12. I was going to suggest that also, just make sure the tube will cover the hole and seal. Or a block from on size to the other, or an inline filter with pipe threads to be your adapter.

  16. At this point only he knows for sure, my interpretation is 3/8 tube inverted flare female to 5/16 tube inverted flare male is what he needs to connect. I believe 3/8 iff has 5/8-18 threads on the nut/fitting.

I'm not finding any that are exactly what you are hunting for.

Do they make a 3/8 flare plug?
Then you could drill it for the 5/16 tubing, this would require a reflare on the line at the carburetor.

  21. Yes, that's what I need. But everything I'm finding with the female end to accept the fuel line has a pipe thread on the other end; it needs to be the same as a 3/8" male tube fitting.

I asked Summit about this, they sent a 3/8" female with a pipe thread...

I may see if I can machine/solder something together. I don't want to stack fittings even if I can find them.

I have cut off the flares on lines and used a compression fitting. did not look as nice as the one above though

  25. I believe the link i posted is the exact part you need.

    quote from above link:
"Use for adapting a 5/8 - 18 inverted port to a 5/16 In. domestic fuel line."

5/8-18 is 3/8 tube nut size

Unless I’m missing what you need, I think it’s been posted above.
