    Hello,

Hot rods and hot rod influenced skateboards are all over the USA. When we were looking for different ways to bring in some income for our expanded family. I looked around the garage for a project that was easy to make and with the parts I had stashed away in several boxes. Our toddler son saw the old kid across the street riding his skateboard in the driveway. Of course, he asked me about skateboards that were in the rafters of our garage. Some of those were remnants of the good old skateboard days many years ago.

He wanted to be able to keep up with the older friend across the street and wanted to try his hand at skateboarding. My wife was a little leery as they both saw me fall on a steep downhill run in our neighborhood street. (one big strawberry from hands, arms, stomach, and legs) The walk home was painful to say the least. But, that accident in front of my wife and toddler son did not dissuade him from wanting to know more about skateboards.

So, I created an all wooden scooter from a solid oak deck, new trucks, and wheels. But, I knew from experience that he was going to fall. So, to ease the worries from my wife, I also created a “t” handle attached to the deck behind the front axle, to prevent forward flips. It was something to hold onto while moving in all directions. He could still glide like skateboarders, lean into curves and turns and stop when he wanted to by using his thick sole "tennies." (the rear 5th wheel brake/skid plate came later)

Only one fall in 24 years of use...not bad for an older guy.

Built in 1977, in the attic in 2019

It had Kryptonic street wheels, German bearings, Independent Trucks, and a Powell/Peralta deck. In all of the years of scooting down this beach trail, I never fell except once right in front of a bunch of surfers. My board and I survived that fall without any dings or nasty scratches. I always wore my wetsuit, boots, and my gloves, so I did not get a single scratch. It just hurt my ego.

When I was out in the water, the red/yellow flames could be seen sitting high up from the sand berms. When I was sitting near the red/yellow flamed scooter, I got tons of questions and compliments.

On one of my son’s first rides, he fell off the back. So, I put a regular wheel with a bearing on a bolt and attached it to the tail block of the scooter. That allowed him to raise the front end and the extra wheel would skid to a stop. It also had a bearing in it, so he could spin on the wheel in a complete 360 degree circle.

Of all the different versions of scooters on the market, ours was the only one with that “custom” wheel. The wheel had several rubber wheel gaskets from the surface underneath the tail block down the bolt to the bearing. It did not take much to make this as there were always extra parts laying around the tool box. (there was a small model for kids, a mid size one for mommies, and a larger one for daddies... All bases were covered. The short/long handles coincided with the stance and model.)

When I rode the larger version with painted flames on the bottom, the neighborhood kids could see how cool it was when I would stop and spin for them. Those times showed the bright flames against a black bottom.

From the other side of the pond...wife and I went to the Paris Auto Show while we were there in early October. They had a large section of older cars, plus some mixed in with the main exhibits.
