Hi all...looking for ideas and inspiration for topping off the tri-power for my current project. Let's see what you've got or what you've seen.
Thanks, any pictures?...curious as to what about the plenum is important? Looks? Functionality? Air volume within plenum? Something else?
The more of the filter exposed to the air the more it will flow. The re-pop Pontiac-Tri power ones have an open style filter.
This was my ole 55 348, they probably weren't that good for all out performance but they looked good.
I post this in jest....... There's a joker selling this on fleabay. It looks like it's for a 4-barrel so you would have to fab a bottom plate.
Here's 4 recent pages on 3 deuce air cleaners https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum...-2-barrel-air-cleaners.1100395/#post-12481554
Here's some. https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/lets-see-your-2-barrel-air-cleaners.1100395/
As pretty as those are, there are no actual air filter elements available to fit them. All you can run is the screen that you see them fitted with. I was told this by the makers Grace and Co.
I used a WIX filter #42719...had to "dress" both sides of the filter and change the threaded strap on the bottom. Don't know what other similar brands of filter would fit.
What exactly is the change to the threaded strap ? And what does the "dressed" filter look like on its own after "dressing" ? Probably works OK, but I found it odd that they made these units without considering an actual filter that fits.
Had to change to a flat strap, drilled & tapped for a 1/4" X 20 bolt...the element was to thick, sanded the top & bottom of the filter elements to get the lid to fit properly. Mine were plain Grace & Co units...I painted them after "massaging" the elements and riveting the new straps. Yeah, they probably should have sized the air filter unit to an available element, but they do look good.
Can you tell me the finished diameter and thickness of your filter element ("dressed" down ) so that I can do a little searching on my own ? I have some unconventional sources for filters that I can check out.
Looks like 1.549 inches thick after sanding the top / bottom only. Didn't do anything to the sides ...3.91 inches.
I made a top and bottom plate out of flat steel. Then used an oval filter. I think Datsun, maybe 240Z. It's been a long time so my memory is a little fuzzy. Sorry, no pics. .bjb
There weren't a lot of choices back in the 80's when I built my Roadster, so I used these small stainless mixing bowls, buffed out to a shine. Used the standard carb mount and K&N filter. Not trad anymore.
