I wanted to give this car a full posting, because it deserves it, This car is almost as cool as the Tweety roadster, and has almost as cool a story. The original build of this car was in the mid 50's. It stayed with the original owner for decades, but at some point he took it down to be rebuilt, and then like so many projects, it never went back together. The owner moved up to the north west, and that's where the car sat for several decades. The current owner found it in pieces and put it back together to the stage it is in now. The original builder, now in his 80's I guess, came to the show to see his old car back together. The similarities with the Tweety car go beyond this, they both are channeled, full fendered, with no running boards, and they both had removable roll bars.

Here are pictures of the car w/ the original builder back in the mid 50's.

This was the coolest shot. In the photo you can see the original builder during his college days, sitting in his college dorm reading Hot Rod mag, on the wall behind him is the drawing of the car seen in this pic.
    DSC_0394.jpg DSC_0395.jpg DSC_0396.jpg
The current owner, who restored the car, talked to me for half an hour at least, as excited to tell me about the car as I was to hear about it. Such a cool experience!

I agree!!! That red model A roadster is a class act. I saw it at a rod run last year, I think it was the first time out.

Rich, never be hesitant to post your pics! Love them All. The little red roadster, the c cab delivery T, all the A's, but when I saw the front engine belly tanker I couldn't help but wonder what it would feel like to be in it at about 100! Well sh*t my knickers, can't wait to see the rest. Thanks, Carp

  11. Oh I agree it is a killer car. We talked a lot about it. Great story! Great bunch of fellow Hot Rodders preserving Hot Rod Historical Cars. They really deserved the Bruce Meyer Award. So strange the car the judges chose.

OK, I've got another batch of photos to post. I would've posted earlier but I picked up some damn bug and have been on the couch or recliner all weeekend, just getting up on the computer now.

    Still in the Model A building, so much to see here. Let's start with fellow HAMBer @Dean Lowe 's roadster pickup. DSC_0398.jpg DSC_0399.jpg DSC_0400.jpg DSC_0401.jpg DSC_0408.jpg DSC_0404.jpg DSC_0405.jpg DSC_0409.jpg DSC_0410.jpg DSC_0411.jpg DSC_0412.jpg DSC_0413.jpg DSC_0417.jpg DSC_0419.jpg DSC_0420.jpg DSC_0421.jpg DSC_0424.jpg DSC_0425.jpg DSC_0426.jpg DSC_0427.jpg DSC_0428.jpg DSC_0429.jpg DSC_0432.jpg DSC_0433.jpg DSC_0434.jpg
This coupe belongs to the guy with the red roadster in the suede palace, a local guy who I've run across on some local runs and is an Instagram friend, Hot Head Lou. His coupe is gorgeous, really well done with a lot of attention to detail. Super clean car.

I was fortunate to be shooting the Ala Kart when Richad Peters walked up and went behind the ropes to stand next to it for a few shots. Timing is everything!

And next to Ala Kart was Emperor. I was fortunate enough to have Richard Peters talk to me for about 10 minutes about building Ala Kart and then Emperor, taking the AMBR award 3 years in a row. Of course, Emperor was his brother-in-law's car.

So I've been reading Ed Iskenderian's book, and this rod and the builder was discussed pretty well in that book. Built by John Athan, he was a close friend of Isky's, a few years older, he was kind of a mentor to him. His previous car was a banger T roadster that he ended up selling to Isky, then building this one. It's credited with being one of the 1st AV8's. It may or may not be the 1st, but it is an early AV8 build for sure. Athan was instrumental in getting Isky into hot rodding and eventually into the cam grinding business. I guess the car is more famous as the Elvis car.

Love the paint work on this coupe!

And that's it for this batch. I have more to post.

I like the earlier batches and natural color better than the "enhanced" ones.

Yes, I know what you mean. Due to the lighting (or lack of) in the building I had to do some post production work on them or else all you'd see is a dark blot. I mostly just lightened them up with very little work other than that. I remember what you said earlier and that was always in the back of my mind.

Great photos Rich! I was there last year with my 41 but missed it this year. Your photos are just as good as being there and without the high priced beers.
