  19. When MGM was finished with the car Gable drove, Joe Gemsa bought it for pennies on the dollar. He put Bud Rose in it and they won a big 500 mile race at Riverside.

  20. ^^^^^That's interesting! Did that car morph in to his Orange Blossom Special?
Joe brought that car all the way to Tampa to run at a AARA meet. Got to meet him and glean some banger tips from him. Probably in the early 80's.

Two different cars. The Orange Blossom Spl. was a rail frame cross spring car built in the 30s. The 'To Please a Lady' car was a 1948 Kurtis built tube frame with T-bar suspension. I believe Tom Malloy has it in his collection nowdays.

Bud Rose was the stand-in driver for Gable while filming the movie also as he looked quite a bit like Gable. Here's a shot of Rose and a couple of notables after winning Riverside 1958.

I'm sure that skull and crossbones is related to the tough guy race car driver image in the movie, and not a totenkopf. But it does look kind of like one from the angle. But it ain't.

I was really looking at it in relation to the use of skulls in vintage Hotrod/Custom/Race rather than the deeper possibly more sinister origins but these type of things did influence what we see today...I am still curious about the script on the shirt no doubt about racing...
