I don't KNOW but, I'm thinking that the Buick was mocked up for the photos, and no attention was paid to the blower sprocket. The article said that there had been no dyno time as of the time the magazine went to press.

Since the blower is centered side to side, the chain would fit either way.

I'd bet if they did follow up article, you would see it switched.

Now, back to the girl with BIG eyes :D

I like your theory. I'm not that familiar with these blowers, but it would mean the front cover bolt pattern would allow for installing the cover upside-down, and the rotor drive extension is on the wrong side, or maybe not even in the blower casing. (Looking at some not-too-clear pictures, it looks like the drive may be on the "wrong" side in its original home on the Detroit Diesel.)

On the GMC (At the time) engine, the blower was gear driven and rotated opposite direction. The drive will go either way since some GM diesels did also rotate opposite. But it is true that as shown the blower would make a great vacume pump for the Buick engine. Pushing air right out the injectors.

Many don't know this but the Roots blower was originally designed for mine shaft ventilation, here is an article from Hemmings that some may find informative.

"The rotating lobe supercharger, first patented in 1860, was the brainchild of brothers Francis and Philander Roots and was originally used for mine ventilation in America........"

The front one is the 215 aluminum Olds, the one in back is the 215 aluminum Buick. Pontiac didn’t have an aluminum 215 of their own, if you bought a V8 Tempest before the 326 was introduced you got the 215 Buick.
