Jerry Van Dyke, Dick's little brother, with the car from his series "My Mother the Car". mid '60s.

The car was Grabowski's Touring modified (I think) by Barris for the short lived series.
    Poor touring.

    Hello,

This corner is very popular these days, as it is on one of the most famous crossroads in the area. In the 1960s, Topanga Canyon was the center of the “Summer of Love” haven. The area had its share of cool places to hang out. One of the most famous from this area is the blues/rock group, Canned Heat (another name for “Sterno”) “ON THE ROAD, AGAIN…”

For us teenage surf aficianados, the surf break was one of the most fun waves in the area. It was good and bad. The good, when it broke, the rides were pretty outstanding. But the bad is that everyone in the world, driving up and down the coast, could see the wonderful waves coming in and would stop for their share, making it crowded, really fast. Our sedan deliveries, station wagons, and vans were on the highway, as there was beach access, just steps away.

Obviously, those 4am cold paddle outs started it off and empty waves were there until 7 am. We timed the driving time from Long Beach up the coast to the Malibu area to be able to paddle out very early. But, the wave direction had to be good just to make the long drive in search for waves. Several times, we stopped here because of no one out, but the Malibu Surfrider Beach waves could have been better, surfing on empty waves trumps crowded waves any day. Those empty waves were limited because of the public views of the surf.

This old gas station was gone by our time period, at this location. But, the funky shops catering to everyone drew in lots of people driving by on Coast Highway North or South. Afterall, it was Topanga Canyon.

In the recent rains in LA County, this intersection and Topanga Canyon was closed due to massive mud slides and flooding. Further up the coast in Northern Malibu to the Oxnard/Camarillo area, the Coast Highway 1 was also closed due to the rain caused mud and road flooding.

On a good, So Cal sunshine day, this 20 mile + drive is one of the nicest in the area. A cool hot rod drive on the 101 Freeway in Woodland Hills can take a left/right turn off of the freeway at the intersection. In about 40 minutes of some curvy canyon driving, be on the Pacific Ocean at Topanga Canyon and PCH. The location on the old photo, posted by Gary R.
