My first car was a 53 Ford 6cyl with a 3 speed. I beat on it like only a dumb 16 year old could but I remember I tore up several of those trans. To be honest I also blew up a clutch and a couple of U joints too. I think maybe side stepping the clutch launches and foot on the floor speed shifts may have had something to with it.

when i was a kid with my 54 ford 239 ohv and i think the same 3 speed i did A LOT of stupid crap, i even drove it 35 feet on the drivers side 2 tires once (by accident) it only had 88k original miles when i bought it but i was always scared to do burnouts in it....i was certain that old trans would blow

i may look around at swap meets for one this year, that would be the perfect period way to do it all for me. i still have the 292 y block option as a backup though and im sure i could find a trans for that easier

In 1963 I could buy one of those 3 speeds in a junk yard for $10-15. I love your 47. I really the 46-48 body style.

wow thats cheap! thanks! im really enjoying it. it is far different from any other car ive ever worked on since its been off the road for so long and this history is so hard to piece together on it. it looks like it had a custom interior over the factory interior at some point, floor shift was put in it. still 6v pos ground and probably was always a flathead of some kind.

Well I only paid $35 for the whole car. I was 15 and bought it with my paper route money. It was just a 2 door post. Those were the days.

  8. Some trannie leads:
this fella had some Lasalles a while back. Might check with him. He is the Buick go to guy over on the AACA forum. I have bought Buick trannies from him. His name is Dave Tacheny at 763-427-3460. Call between 6 and 7 pm only. He lives in Champlin, MN and only accepts Western Union wire transfers if I recall correctly. He does ship globally.

Also, Jim in Buffalo, NY had an Olds tranny back in July he was trying to sell. Might PM him @Fedcospeed
And @Eddie in Georgia has had some lasalles and Olds 3 speeds as well. In fact I sold him my spare 50 Olds 3 spd back in '17. Might pm him also.

Well the dash looks good. Just be safe. Using pier blocks are better than cinder blocks but remember cement is porous and will crack. My brothers friend died at 18 because he used cinder blocks to support his Lemans . The blocks held up until he was under the car then broke apart. They buried in the club t shirt. Don't be him .

i was talking about pier blocks and 2x6s to hold the body, not the whole car, i do appreciate the safety warning though. ya never know....i got to where when im doing brakes i use the jack, jackstands and stick the wheel under the car just to be safe

so my plan for all you paint guys out there to give me feedback on is to let the dash now sit for about 9 days. wet sand with 1000 then wipe clean and wet sand with 2000, then wipe clean and use a cutting compound by hand followed by polish then wax

That should work well. Beware, you may not like a super shiny dash while driving. The glare can be annoying as hell. If you can set it in the sun it will dry faster than indoors.

i thought about that, with all of the dash trim though it doesnt seem like much of the dash is still showing? maybe another 46-48 owner can chime in?

That would make it maybe $1200 for a boneyard trans. No wonder you didn't want to F it up.

zephyr hub caps? cool? not so cool? the look im going for is full trim, very clean and classic looking, very period almost stock with subtle changes then a big ol engine under the hood! kind of a "cool high school kid got moms car in 1961" job

I saw this dash at the nats . Be said that the glare wasn't to bad if you wore sunglasses IMG_20190203_085040939.jpeg

Lots of the bezels and waterfalls in those cars were shiny. My Linc is the same way, sometimes the sun will hit just right and blind the crap outta you. Just part of driving old stuff designed before the safety nazi's took over designs.....

yeah, not the first shiney dashed car ive had either, i get that its a tradeoff. shiney dash that looks awesome in exchange for looking saweeeeet! nobody can say that their 32 is easier to drive with less blind spots after a 5" chop right? why do it? well cause its badass!

beginning steering wheel restoration! only took me 3 days to get it off of the cut off column i bought it on. on the column in my car a previous owner hacked and beat the old steering wheel to death then tried to mount a wheel over it.... i pulled what was left of the old wheel, now ill try to replace the piece that goes behind the wheel, restore my wheel, paint it and put it all back together! 20190205_215539.jpg 20190205_220001.jpg 20190205_215056.jpg

Check out some of the steering wheel repair threads, if you haven't already. You really have some enthusiasm, wish I was as motorvated at times.

thanks! yeah i have been reading them, seems like whats it called? pc-7? is an option, from what ive read that and jb weld have very similar results, im going to try jb weld i think. i will make sure my cracks are angled and cleaned out well first! the way i look at these projects is there is always something to do, while my son watches a cartoon ill put a drop cloth across my lap and feather sand a steering wheel rather than watch cartoons haha any progress is something i dont have to do later!
