Technical I know it’s not traditional, but what about vinyl wrap?

Hey all getting started on some mechanical work on my Buick and tossing around the idea of a paint change or something

The paint on my car is OLLLD but in good shape, my guess is an old 70’s paint job

A light-ish green/grey with black

I was thinking white over red or ..... ?

And with what vinyl wrapping is worth ... about a G-note for a full car I figured why the hell not ?!?

Any one done this before?







Also found a set of Buick wires for dirt cheap, they have been sand blasted and primered
Anyone have luck painting wire wheels and how did they look?
Aluminum paint? White? I dunno?
For the price I might just get them $250for the set and mess around with them

 

A Grand at Macco or Earl Scheib will go a long way on a scuff and squirt. As for wraps. I don't care for the look that the color has.

 

Only about 99% of all more high end race cars are wrapped..! Even many of the every day type racer has big vinyl patches on their cars/
I've seen a couple of street driven cars in my area with it done.
What's the concern ?

The vinyl manufacturing guys need to come up with a "rust" pattern..!

It works good on top of a bowl of potatoe salad.

This!, but before I go on. Please, don't take nice car's and make them look old. Now, to all you guy's trying to do the old look. Stop, put down the wet and dry and scotch brite and go this route.

I like your paint now. Sort of has a classy/sporty look. Look at Nascar and the beating and banging those wraps take and they hold up good. Also , they look great up close.

Wraps are fine for racecars as the quality has greatly increased, and the monies spent for traditional paint can be put to good use in other places ($400 vs $3500) but street cars to replace a solid color, wraps have their limits largly due to the skill of the gut doing it

 

Why cover paint that nice?
I personally can’t stand the rusty ratty “patina “ look but here are some more positive outlooks.
1) paint that nice can be protected by the wrap.
2) the wrap could be removed in the future for a change or to improve resale prospects.

As much as I don’t like it there are benefits to some wraps, just look at the clear 3M film a lot of people get installed on their new vehicles to prevent road damage.

At a shop here in Edmonton recently they had a brand new bright yellow Lamborghini URUS in for a complete body clear 3M film wrap.

For what a paint shop charges compared to what your saying a wrap costs , the extra money can be spent on go fast parts , the wife and burgers and beer .

It boils down to this for me. One shouldn't duplicate real paint with a sheet. One shouldn't duplicate age with a sheet of sand paper.

 

This one has patina and I wish it was painted.

 

Your car do what you want with it.......but......for me, I like the paint it now has.
If you should later decide to sell with a wrap .......might limit your buyers.

How did this become about patina?!?
I like aged good condition paint.
But fake rust and patina is just plain dumb.
I like the paint that’s on the car, just that I’ve seen a few Buick’s done in red over white and blue over white, or even a different shade of green over black.... I dunno just thinking out loud.

What I like about the wrap is for not to much money and 0 prep time besides a good washing ( yes I’ve read the “ how to wash a barn find” thread ! Lol !
You can change paint colours and schemes untill you find what works.
And likes been said even IF I wanted to do some shitty 80’s pastels and graphics once I’m tired of it, I just peel of the vinyl and I still have my good original colours paint underneath.

Any ideas on the painted wire wheels?

 

I’m sorry..I know the purists on here are going to roll their eyes..but that is an impressive job on that car. Wrap or no wrap.

Like I said I know it’s not traditional, but for an easy cost effective way to change colours or experiment with flames or scallops, bellflower paint etc. Why not?

Wasn't there a guy on here who wrapped a '56 Chevy (maybe a wagon?) in the factory blue/white two tone. Looked pretty good in the pics, IIRC. Been a while ago.

That tri five wagon is exactly the one I had in mind, glad you posted that. I cant see any problems with wanting to use that if its truly cheaper than a nice paint job. Around here your looking at 6-7k at least for a cheap but nice looking paint job.
