Hey folks, I tried a search for this and can't seem to find anything...newbie here so maybe user error? Anyone have any photos to share of this setup being done? From what I understand this used to be done occasionally to achieve a much lower ride height?
Usually referred to as underslung. American Underslung was an American car manufacturer in the early 1900s who configured their suspensions this way. Not my favorite setup for a hot rod personally but whatever. Good luck.
I remember that green underslung roadster that was a big hit with the magazines a few years ago that would get you in instant trouble with the state patrol in this state due to obvious scrub line issues. The car would never make it in or out my driveway without getting hung up. I think the key if a guy were to build a rod that was underslung is to build it as a very early build with tall skinny wheels and tires and somewhat reasonable ground clearance rather than the underslung rat rod stuff you see now. Simply meaning you can be real low if you don't worry about licensing it and driving it any distance on the street and the only driving it gets is from the trailer to the parking spot at the show. This is about the best photo I can find of an American Underslung that shows the chassis in reasonable detail. Super tall wheels and what would be high ground clearance now but was low then.
Mr48chev, I think the car your talking about was a Dodge modified like a 1922 and the builder has since died but the car is out there in circulation still. I think I first saw it in Rod and Custom.

Not sure but I recall seeing it in a couple of magazines, that car had to be seen in person to fully appreciate it, so many details. I saw it many years ago at the CHRR, vaguely remember talking to him, neat car and a very talented guy. In my younger years a car like that would not have been very attractive to me, funny thing what the passage of time does for ones thinking.
