I'm ashamed to say it's been over a year since I last posted on the FAS. I've been busily jumping between film, photography and art jobs. Here's a brief summary of what I've been up to.
I've still been doing the Advent sketches (a picture a day in December). The 2017 series were film and tv inspired vintage vehicles...
    Auto Art Advent 2017 1440.jpg
Early in the year I enjoyed watching a good friend getting stuck into his two latest projects - one of the original aluminium-bodied Bill Thomas Cheetahs...
    CheetahBuild02s.jpg
    cheetah colour s2.jpg
... and something much older - an 1896 Salvesen Steam Car!
    Salvesen S.jpg
One of the most exciting things last year was an invitation to America to do some iPad sketching at the Mint 400 and Sebring. The Mint was unlike anything I'd ever seen before - as was the desert and Las Vegas. Not the easiest place to sketch on a glass tablet, but I loved all of it - especially the 70s sand rails and buggies which had taken part in the early races...
    Mint01s.jpg
    Mint08s.jpg Mint09s.jpg Mint21s.jpg Mint22s.jpg
Sebring saw me looking for shade in the pits - and even race control!
    Sebring06s.jpg Sebring07s.jpg Sebring08s.jpg Sebring11s.jpg Sebring15s.jpg
Back in the UK, the summer brought a trip to Goodwood as part of Porsche's 70th anniversary...
    P70 RS61 s.jpg
... and a brief road trip to the Mallory circuit in a Curtiss-engined Edwardian special...
    Mallory comp s.jpg Monarch s.jpg
    Monarch Jul 01s.jpg
... and finally some vintage hot rods at a local hill climb!
    A3 GOW thumbs s.jpg GOW 435s.jpg GOW 584bs.jpg
In the autumn I got some a last bit of sunshine on a 600 mile road trip through France in another Curtiss engined car - a GN cyclecar. If you're not sure what that is, imagine putting a V8 aero engine in a go cart. Then imagine getting chased by an angry escaped cow...
    44757934512_1433ae7428_o.jpg 44807388561_ff75261ea8_o.jpg
There wasn't a lot of room for luggage so I only took a single pen to sketch with...
    Piglet s.jpg V8GNs.jpg
I got one more exciting outing in the year - this time trialling in a friend's 1903 Mercedes. Trialling is a bizarre mix of extreme silliness, adrenaline, beautiful landscapes and wonderful machinery ... and mud, lots of mud...
    32065002038_9e8e27bbe7_o.jpg
Finally December brought the Advent series again. This time, pushed for time, I stuck to brush pen doodles - and rather cheekily made up semi-believable stories about them all. I had a few awkward enquiries from people trying to discover more about the cars but came clean in the end :)
    Auto Art Advent 2018A2 2k.jpg
I feel slightly embarrassed posting all of these stories in one go. I've had far more fun around cars than any one person deserves - but hopefully you can enjoy the sketches and photos without getting angry about what a ridiculously lucky sod I am. Take a look at instagram and flickr if you'd like to see more photos and drawings of the above trips.

    Hello,

Ever since we started going to Lions Dragstrip, there have been plenty of fast race cars running against each other. We liked the look of the Albertson Oldsmobile, “Lil Rocket” insignia, Fiat Modified Coupe when it showed up in the pits. We were amazed that the same driver, Leonard Harris was able to do so well in both the Modified Coupe and the Albertson Oldsmobile FED race car.

Back In 1959-60, the Albertson Oldsmobile Dealership on Sepulveda began a part of drag racing history in So Cal. They were prominent in 1960 when Leonard Harris made his historic consecutive top eliminator victories at Lions Dragstrip. That consecutive win streak record and Albertson Olds will always be a bookmark in my memory.

“ I did not notice the surrounding events going on, but during this same time period, the Albertson Olds FED with Leonard Harris was setting their consecutive, So Cal, win streak record at Lions. It just so happened that on this day, we stopped that consecutive week’s, win streak due to having the track shut down. Record of this shut down has been misprinted in many publications. (It was a C/Gas coupe, not a C/Altered that stopped the streak.)”
    upload_2019-1-11_4-56-18.png From WDIFL
“The Albertson Oldsmobile dealership was a short distance down Sepulveda Boulevard from Adams' home. Longtime Albertson parts manager Don Farr introduced (Gene)Adams and (Leonard)Harris in early I960, and at Farr's urging, Adams agreed to put his 407-cid Olds engine in Harris' coupe.”

“The Albertson Oldsmobile Racing team posed for this publicity shot at the Culver City dealership in spring 1960. From left, kneeling, are Gene Adams and Ronnie Scrima; standing, Lou Albertson, Leonard Harris, and sales manager Phil McNab, Albertson Oldsmobile was the first dealership to become a household name among race fans nationwide.”

“Harris' driving ability and the willingness of Albertson to provide sponsorship in the form of engine parts, paint jobs, and lettering brought the trio together. The Albertson Olds dragster debuted April 24 after Adams' Olds was taken from the Fiat and lowered between the K-88 chassis' huge three-inch by .095-inch frame rails.”

“The combination of a chassis that worked, abundant reliable horsepower, and a naturally skilled driver clicked immediately. Harris broke Tommy Ivo's San Fernando track record with a 9.30, set top speed of the meet at 163.33 mph, and won the event. He repeated the feat a week later at Lions.”

“On May 21, they broke it in with a 9.08,163.33-mph pass to begin an amazing string of 12 straight Top Eliminator wins at Lions, then the most hotly contested Top Gas track in the country with fields often in excess of two dozen entries.”

After only a six month reign of terror, Leonard Harris was killed in another car at Lions in late 1960, Scrima left the team and Tom McEwen took over the driving, beginning a long and successful partnership with Gene Adams.”

    upload_2019-1-11_4-57-30.png August 1960
After our Lions excitement, we drifted away from the drag race scene during my brother’s recovery. We were sad to see that Leonard Harris was in an accident at Lions in someone else’s FED and did not survive. That was a period of sadness for all those involved.

a re-do, sorry, too many errors

But, since I did not have any racing films that I took from Lions Dragstrip of the Albertson Olds Fiat Coupe, here is one from the 1960 Bakersfield Smokers March Meet:

Thanks for the encouragement! Love your sketches too. I dream of sketching in such a place. One day I'll do a road trip across the backwaters of America, seeking out rusty old trucks to sketch :)

Not a great photo but you get the idea E86B0929-E3DF-4AE1-84EF-556A9F5858A7.jpeg what’s more traditional than stick welding?

All I got this week but I’m feeling inspired!
