so I have a 46 Cadillac flathead 346 . I have a repop 32 grille. Building a 32 chassis soon. What year original V8 ford radiators can I use to fit the 32 grille? What do I need to look out for? I found this one and cheap for sale but it looks like a 36 37 .? Ps can’t upload the photo for some reason.???
I put a 36 radiator on my a v8 coupe. I had a 32 commercial grill. I am pretty sure the 32 commercial grill is dimensionally the same width and depth as the car grill. Even the top 2 holes in the grill shell lined up with the threaded holes in the radiator. There's pictures of it in my albums on my profile page. The upper tank of the 36 radiator has an indentation on the bottom to clear the fan as well which was helpful in my situation.
Buddy uses 1962ish ford truck 6 cylinder radiators... cool his sbc's... they fit in a '28 or '30 shells... they have a trapiziodal upper tank w/ center cap, rectangular lower... a 3" mounting flange that must be trimmed... …...……. it is a …. Modine 397... oh, and they are under $150 new... shop around, he gets them for $126... he, and i use a 4' florescent light's defuser, 1/2" square holes, 3/8" thick... $13 at lowz… does [2] grills... bottom pic is a tudor with the defuser and his '31 shell...
<------- I used a Walker Radiate designed for a 1932 ford, Walker's come with a 10 year guarantee and they are copper/brass and mine is over 30 years old and I have never experienced any problem. I learned a long time ago do it right the first time and you will save money in the long run. HRP
The Cadillac motor has two outlets on the top of the motor but only one inlet at the bottom on the right side. will a '32 radiator work with that? Guess you could block off the left side lower port on the radiator.
65 Mustang does work , Walker very good , I used Custom Auto Radiator years ago . I just put a Griffin in my buddy’s 34 it seems to be doing well .
I've sold quite a few Walker Radiators with the inlets and outlets custom built for a specific motor.
Agree with HRP, Buy a Walker radiator and call it done, they have a core as needed, will put outlets where they need to be, all them old flatheads run hot, why screw around, Pricey, BUT Good, IMO
My rebuilt flathead v8 always ran hot. It was a new Fred Jones rebuild from Oklahoma City and my radiator had been rodded out
The hot flat , lots of times is caused by ignition , not enough advance as RPM rises . It’s really a bad design to run cool, real similar to the effects of a boiler . The last one I did it was rusted solid , a trip to ready strip for a tank dip . Cooling system looked new , seemed to work ok with the correct distributer and timing . The vacuum advance is your friend or enemy depending on how it’s working on a flathead .
