So the wife says that I need to get out of the house and make some friends. I know of Gas Axe garage in Allendale, but other than them is there a whole of traditional hot rod groups in the west Michigan area?

Don't know any hot rodders over there (I'm south of Flint) but one of my life-long friends is a professor at GVSU. She and her hubby (he's a gearhead) live in Allendale.

I'm in Grandville... So about smack dab in the middle of Grand rapids, Holland, and Allendale. The thing that kind of sucks for me is a lot of car guys around here are twice my age

Is it that you don't wanna hang out with them?
    I doubt that's true.
I get the idea that you're assuming that maybe they don't wanna hang with you.
    I doubt that's true either.
We talk about this often here. Young vs old. If you give it a chance, you might find that most older guys are more than happy to include a younger guy who shows a true passion for the hobby.

Rickybop is right. The only I might add is that if you have the Right attitude anything is possible, just let them have their coffee first!

It's seasonal but there is a good showing at the Holland DW grocery store parking lot, Sunday evenings. Young and old in attendance.

You should look up crafty b. He is in Grand Rapids I believe. I’m sure he can help you out plus he does a lot of cool stuff with sand casting.

Ok now I'm curious, how does a guy in California know about a Sunday car show at the grocery store parking lot in Holland??
Also this thread isn't to say that I haven't met, and got help from a lot of people on this site. I've always been a lone wolf that's trying finally find out where I fit in in this hobby.

Damn straight. And they are the reason the younger guys get to know so much. That way, one day, the young guys become the old guys who know stuff.

The Relix is the club that hosts the Relix Riot at Gilmore Museum. Real traditional guys. Flyin Brian is on here too. And I agree on the old guys.

  14. I'm from the east side of the state but know several hot rodders from the Grand Rapids area. As far as I'm concerned, G.R. is kind of the hot bed of traditional hot rodding in Michigan right now. I spend a lot of time over there and wish I lived closer. Most of the G.R. guys aren't on the HAMB, but are on Instagram.

My best suggestion is to attend the Relix Riot car show at the Gilmore Car Museum next summer. It's a traditional hot rod/custom show. Myself and all of the Grand Rapids guys will be there. Plan on camping for the weekend and by Sunday you'll have a whole new group of friends.

Also, Mike at Gas Axe has garage nights a few times a month. show up, don't be dink, and you'll meet tons of like-minded people.

Shoot me a PM and try to hook you up with some of the guys.

You can learn a lot from the seasoned fellas. Besides, you’ll be there quicker than you think. I heard a guy say the other day that he fell asleep in study hall and when he woke up he was 65.

I didn't realize Relix was a group kind of just assumed that Gas Axe put that show on

That is one of my motivations...to be able to enjoy hot rodding while I can still fit behind the steering wheel, and be able to hold a wrench over my head with out getting dizzy.

I meet a group every Saturday for breakfast, all are into hot rods. It has almost become a standing joke that we need to meet some YOUNGER FRIENDS. We are all building more cars and getting older, we want to share info, not to mention that the heavy parts are getting heaver all the time!

Start off by attending some car shows with your car as folks are drawn to
nice cars. Be willing to talk (a little) about your car and (listen a lot) to what other folks say.
In short, be a good listener and ask questions.

  19. And if the old man are sitting around drinking bourbon and smoking cigars leave them alone and don't poke them. Old men will not fight fair and beat you with anything they can get their hands on.:D
