FYI a broken off screwdriver can be ground down with a cut-off wheel into a really good clutch head driver. Sharpen the ends of the hourglass shape really good and they bite into the screw and break things loose easier than a flathead or Phillips.

 

Im 90 miles away from any decent hardware store..
I had to get the universal bit for them.

Drilled some out too

 

Somewhere I read that those were invented so the douche bags couldn't unscrew the hardware on public restroom stalls.

Also I have a 50s school bus and a 55 ford ford vanette, both have some 1 1/2"x1 1/2" strips of pine screwed to the sheetmetal for that 80s wood paneling, all done with slotted head screws..
Who has time for that..
Im sure they didnt use an electric drill so it must all been by hand with a screwdriver

 

In the late 70's when I started getting a pay check for building custom cabinets this was the power driver of the time.

 

If the clutch head screw is "out in the open", like on a truck bed, I find using a cutoff wheel to grind a slot into the screw, then giving the screwdriver about three good raps with a hammer before loosening tends to do the trick

However, I agree- the inventor was either an engineer or a lawyer, and he/she/it (along with their compatriots) will all burn in Dante's 5th level of Hell.

 

These were on the dash behind the windshield,so i had to drilk them out and couldnt drill stright down because of the windshield..

Could you screw wood through sheet metal with those?

Yes. If you couldn't you'd be called a pussy back then. That said, pilot holes are ones friend. Even with today's power tools there's a reason to do pilot holes.

 

Those blasted things have stopped me in my tracks at PicknPull more than once. I think the same guy invented rivet nuts.

 

I got lucky and pulled two stepside fenders off at a junkyard without having to use a @#%&%! head bit. Removing the ones on my truck was not as enjoyable an experience. Hopefully the inventor was neutered so he couldn't pass that gene on.

I just pull out the Sonic Screwdriver and set the reverser on low speed. Point at it and push the button. Screw backs out like butter.

I used to have a BSA murdercycle . It wasn't metric it was Whitworth.After working on it it was gone!!

 

Harbor Freight has an assortment kit for 1/4 inch drive that has 3 sizes clutch heads bits. I use them taking 46 Chevy cab apart but will be using button heads going back. I hate them things!

I was looking for one particular clutch-head bit at the auto parts store a few years ago and ended up with a set of over 100 bits that had everything imaginable. It had all sizes of "security" Torx (the ones with the pin in the middle) and even had bits for those goofy screws that have two round holes in the head. One of the best purchases I ever made.

 

I often wondered if someone didn't give GM a bunch of those screws so they could sell a bunch of screwdrivers.
