1961 & 62
Hello,

In our junior & senior year of high school, my friend’s mom somehow got us jobs at an extended family-run Christmas tree lot in Bixby Knolls. It was on one of the busiest cross streets in the whole area. There were lots of customers. Car loads of our friends would cruise by, stop by, and actually shop for their family tree at this corner lot. It was one of the best of times during high school. The tree lot was next door to the famous Hof’s Hut restaurants, one of the hangouts of everyone for a sit down meal, at all hours of the day and night.

Not only was this Christmas tree lot in the center of activities, it was close to several other favorite teenage hang out, restaurants down the street. A hamburger place and a famous barbecue restaurant supplied our lunches and dinners daily. That was living…see our friends, spray the fluffy white stuff on the custom trees, cut down any size tree, make wreaths, eat fabulous foods, and stay in a cool trailer that was plugged into the lot’s electricity. During school, it was an after school job. On the weekends, it was a vacation spot until late Sunday night.

The one incident still stays on my mind. If my friend were still around, he would have remembered it, too. Around 10pm, a well-dressed lady walked into the lot and asked to see a white tree. We did not have any standing, because they were custom flocked on the spot. We asked what she wanted and she said a 7 foot tall, white tree. So, I ran around looking for a 7 foot tall tree. Our trees were divided into even sizes, so I brought back an 8 foot and called it a 7 footer. Since I was the “flocker” I got to work on the white tree.

She wanted it delivered to her house in Belmont Shore, near Alamitos Bay. Well, that was a long drive down and back, at 10pm at night. But, she said she would compensate us for our time and efforts. Well, we could not help it but after delivering the tree, we could always stop at Domenico’s Pizza Place for a quick meal. (Being growing teens and all…)

Her house, on the beach side of the Bay, was one of the only houses left over from the old hurricane/flooding days in Long Beach, and it was spectacular. Today, it still is standing by itself. We set it up in front of a big bay window and she tipped us rather well for our efforts. We were happy campers and had a nice cruise back to Bixby Knolls.

The whole Christmas season(2) at this Central Bixby Knolls tree lot was fun. There was a black 58 Impala and a cool, white 57 Chevy Bel Air parked next to the trailer. “2 cool shorts sitting side by side…” CUSTOM, CHRISTMAS TREE DELIVERY VEHICLES…

P.S. On Christmas Eve, a little kid and his mom came by the lot and were looking at a huge tree. They were in a scruffy, VW bug, so the tree could not be very big. He wanted the big green tree and the mom said that she could not afford it. So, being nice teenagers and so close to Christmas, I sprayed a little 4 foot tree white and hung a one red ball on it. The kid’s eyes lit up and the mom said she still could not afford it.

At that moment, my friend and I, looked at each other, and gave the 4 foot white tree to them as a gift from us. It was wrapped and mounted on top of the Bug. (We even threw in a scraggly, Charlie Brown, one foot tall, specimen of a tree with a modified stand, for the kid’s room.) A couple of girls were visiting us in the trailer and when they saw what we did, that scored big time points !!! Pay It Forward, 1961 style…
