Technical Do you say Engine or Motor?

This is all so confusing

 

I still like to call it a Mill Danny. I know I go down to the Department of Engine Vehicles, to get my license
for my engine cycle. One things for sure with all these electric cars coming in the future, the DMV will finally
get something right.....

 

Even Garlits went over to the other camp...........but I don't have to like it!

I like “plant” for the mill.
It's got a cop motor, a 440 cubic inch plant, it's got cop tires, cop suspensions, cop shocks. It's a model made before catalytic converters so it'll run good on regular gas. What do you say, is it the new Bluesmobile or what?

 

I strive to use only Genuine GE Parts in and on my Chevrolets.

Precision in language does matter. However it doesn’t matter to everyone. But precision does display a bit more refinement in the use of the tool such as lathe or language. Somewhere along the line I presume the engine/motor usage was in part due to “ lost in translation”. I will always call a spade a spade and a shovel a shovel. An engine is powered by combustion of fuel and motors run on electricity. Language is organic an ever changing hence popular usage. But I prefer a bit more precision.

an engine is a contraption; an engineered machine to accomplish some task(s). the more general use of the word has fallen from favor mostly. a thing made to lift water from say a well, was a lifting engine.

a motor is a source of motive power.

the metal blob what makes a car go is, actually both.

but only pedants care.

I think I'm gonna start calling them "contraptions" again.

 

Hence my comment regarding ever changing language and popular usage. Let’s hear from the engineering guys.

I do use both terms interchangeably though.

My gasoline fueled mechanical device designed to convert energy into work. I also have several electric versions around the shop and home.

I used to race "on motor" sometimes, meaning no extra energy generated by nitrous oxide. There used to be classes at the drags called "Mountain Motor".

Seems I don't get some of these important memos rather often, like when did antifreeze become radiator fluid? What's up with changing the air in tires? I mean some stuff is just short of genuine stupid. Still, motors come in lots of flavors. We like that, right?

i'm french , and my english langage is poor...
it's funny , because fev 2018 , i was looking on hamb for a fresh rebuilt 324 engine..
in french , it'ts called "moteur" , so i though "motor" in english..
translator told me : engine......
in french "engin " is a truck , or caterpillar......
i was desappointed when i saw on another thread a member said about his car : "my girl " !!!!!!!
