The old location 1950s to 2003 off of Padaro Lane, Carpenteria,CA

    Hey V,
Yes, it is a sad part when traditions don’t last long for the next generation to enjoy. The destruction and move was supposedly an improvement. Was it? Last year during Thanksgiving in 2017, we drove right near that new location on the freeway in Oxnard. We missed seeing it as our turn off from Highway 1 was a couple of blocks away to the North. On the way home, we just did not see it as we went to Las Posas to Highway 1 for a change of scenery.

New location from 2003 to today…

“After barely surviving the destruction of Santa Claus Lane by developers last year, the 20-ft. tall plaster Santa will be displayed in a vacant lot next to a mobile home park in Nyeland Acres. The statue should be visible off Highway 101 between Camarillo and Oxnard. 2801 Ventura Blvd. between Rice Road and Del Norte exits.”

This year during 2018 Thanksgiving, we were on Highway 126 coming from Simi Valley to Ventura and points North. So, again, we missed that giant statue. On the way home, we took Oxnard Blvd through the old part of Oxnard to see our favorite old store: the Asahi Market on 7th St. (It was respite from the long drive from OC, and/or a food and drinks stopover from Goleta ) Maybe next year, we will stop at that Santa Statue location for a photo or two.

This is the best history and explanation of the demise of the big giant Santa Claus from Santa Claus Lane in Carpenteria. https://enchantedamerica.wordpress.com/2014/08/31/roadside-santa-oxnard-ca/

Here is a vintage postcard from the 1950s-'60s.

Where did the old partner, the “Giant Snowman”: go after being removed from Santa Claus Lane?
2003: “Tom Merkel is a collector, in the most basic and inclusive sense. He recently “rescued” the towering Frosty the Snowman from Santa Claus Lane, giving it permanent residence keeping watch over a sea of old Buicks, Cadillacs, and Lincolns.”

Now: “Artist Tom Merkel’s Cuyama Historical Car Garden in Northern California—a memorial to the men of machines and the machines of men—is unique.”

The Dallas Love Field terminal is still there although it has been built over quite a bit. It doesn't look like that any longer.

Everyone keeps posting the photo of the giant Santa holding the '54 Chevy in Dallas back in Christmas of '53. Well, here's the story: (The newsreel enclosed in the article is pretty graphic, but that is how they used to present news back in the day.) BTW... Porter Chevrolet was directly across the street from the giant art deco Dr. Pepper plant on Mockingbird Lane in Dallas. The area looked pretty much the same until maybe 20 years ago. Some of the buildings on the side of the street near where the dealership was still exist. The restaurant Campisi's Egyptian Lounge is still there. BTW... when he died Raymond Beadle was married to Rosalyn Campisi who ran the restaurant after her famous father died. It was a supposed mob run joint and Jack Ruby ate there the night before he shot Lee Harvey Oswald.

I heard that the cop was Tom's brother in law, & they staged the whole shoot. Here's another pix at roadster roundup back in the 1970's of Tom & Deanna. That Mosher motor was so loud, I used to tease Tom when we went thru a tunnel, it sounded like a cement mixer!
